I use my truck for work and we are supposed to replace it evey 6 years or will be subject to taxes on our allowance. I currently drive a f-150 with the 5.0. GM has some decent deals going on right now and I am familar with the 5.3, my wife's tahoe has one. The dealership i am looking at has several 3.0 diesels in stock for about the same price as the ones with the 5.3. I do not really tow anything so that should not be a factor. Anyone had both and have any real world feedback? I did sserach a few old threads and the 3.0 had good reviews on this board.

I have a 22 Silverado with the 3.0 it has 53k mikes on it and not a single issue yet. It gets 28-30mpg on the interstate if I set cruise on the speed limit.
Towing is ok it tows a SXS fine but grunts when I tow a compact tractor with front end loader.
As of now Im completely satisfied with it and would buy another one again.

I almost bought a 3.0 after I sold my 2015 F-150 5.0 with 300k trouble free miles. What stopped me was finding out there is a service to the engine every 100k miles where a belt has to be changed on the backside of the engine (oil pump maybe?). Problem is that the transmission has to be dropped for this to be done at a cost of several thousand dollars. As many miles as I drive doing this 2-3 times while I own the truck was a no-go. I do have friends that still bought them and they love it.

To paraphrase:

quote:

I have a 22 GMC Sierra AT4 with the 3.0 it has 44k miles on it and not a single issue yet. It gets 26-28mpg on the interstate if I set cruise at 75mph. It has towed a fully-loaded enclosed 5x8 trailer and family of 5 on a long roadtrip and got 21-23 mpg.
As of now I'm completely satisfied with it and would buy another one again.

Just realize that any savings that you get from the fuel mileage, you lose to the price of diesel and DEF fluid.

It's 150,000 miles on the 2020-2022 LM2 and 200,000 on the 2023 and onward LM2 and LZ0. Same part number.

The estimated cost is $3,000.00.

I average driving 20,000-25,000 miles per year. Stretched over time, I'll pay an extra $40 per month, and increased cost of oil change and for DEF, to drive a truck with a 3.0 Duramax in it.

Have had both. Just traded my ‘21 for a ‘24. Both with the 3.0.
The perfect engine for my needs…quiet…great mpg… and tows my full size bassboat/merc 250 like it’s not even back there.
Coupled with that 10-speed it’s a terrific combination for lighter/med towing (5,000 lbs or so)

Glad they upped the mileage to 200K for the oil pump belt. Should be the last truck I ever buy.

I sold my 2019 5.3 to my son when I bought the 2022 diesel. He had 93k miles on it and had a lifter collapse on it last month and wrecked the cam 2200$ in parts to fix it.

My wife has a Yukon at4 with the 3.0 in it, so far so good with 7000mi. It doesn’t tow as well as I thought it would though, I used it to tow my 8.5x18 goose rig only half loaded down the road (5 or so miles) just to see how it would do and I was not impressed to be completely honest, my nephew’s 3.5 eco tows better.

My old company had a fair amount of pick ups with 3.0 in them and they were all good vehicles and those jackasses put some hard miles on them.

For me, DEF is $26 every 5k miles and I spend half as much in diesel as I did on gasoline. Oil changes are the same. It definitely costs me less to own the 3.0 than the Ram with a Hemi.

I had a 5.3 Sierra before the Ram with the Hemi. The Ram got 17 mpg, the 5.3 got 20 mpg and the 3.0 gets 28 mpg. Same commute to and from work.

About 4,000 miles into the 3.0. I’m very happy so far.

I’ll add that I had a 6.2 Sierra before my 3.0 Duramax. When I traded it in with about 15,000 miles on it, I checked the overall fuel mileage. It was 12.6. That thing couldn’t pass a gas station. I got a little over 300 miles to each tank. Now I have smaller tank and get over 500 miles out of it sometimes.

21 Silverado with 3.0 babymax…engine has been great. 131k miles on it now. Been back to the shop several times for emission issues.

Oh yeah…transmission went out at 120k miles. So that sucked.

Same for me. With the Ram I got 330 per tank, in the 5.3 Sierra I got around 400 per tank and with the 3.0 I get 650 per tank. All 3 trucks had similar tank sizes within a gallon or two. All the same driving. If I baby the 3.0 I’ll get over 30 mpg. I was skeptical and was worried I was making a mistake but so far I’m very pleased with it.
