Lots of fire towers in south Alabama and Mississippi. I'd love to climb one but it seems most are fenced off and don't want visitors. Anybody know of a public one or been up one?

Several along the AT open to the public

used to climb one north of Shreveport years ago, would lug a few beers up there and enjoy the view, doubt it’s accessible anymore

I've gotten 1/2 way up on a few in northern WI before I wimp out and go back down.

A couple of my buddies and me did back in high school. You can definitely see a long ways off from up that high

Yes. Wife and I rented one in Colorado for 2 nights, many moons ago. Jersey Jim's Fire Tower.
Pretty cool experience. I highly recommend.

Liverpool fire tower in northern St. Helena Parish. Climbed it several times in high school, and it’s still accessible today.

This is how they did it back in the day

I've climbed the Smith Mountain fire tower at Lake Martin many, many times. Actually got some shots of it from the water a week ago.
and here are some pictures from years past from the top of the tower

This was the last one. But more like climbing to a tower vs climbing a tower.

When I was a kid they had one on barksdale AFB… it was in the back reservation…I think abandoned.. nothing in it… my dad use to drop my brother and I off back there with friends and we would rough camp a few nights… We would go up it a lot to goof around.. two of my friends climbed down once on the outside .. I used the steps!!
I did a lot of stupid things…

That is a helluva hike.
It was a spur of the moment thing too. Tore up our knees trying to make a quick descent before dark.

My grand dad worked for the Arkansas Dept of Forestry for 20yr and as a i was a child there were 2 towers he was reponsible for. One inbetween Crossett and Fountain Hill and one between Fountain Hill and Monticello.
They had a base station radio and a view that was outta this world amazing.
I miss him and spending hours up there just taking all of that view into my young mind.
We ate bagged lunches and peeled apples out of those fold out windows. Not a clue why we peeled the apples out the window but we did and I still have that knife some 45yrs later and 22yrs since his passing.

Probably more than a hundred times.
My dad was a forester, grew up with the second tallest one in Louisiana literally in my backyard.

There was one in Crossroads, Mississippi, about five miles outside of Bogalusa. We'd ride our bikes there and climb it. We also climbed a water tower just before we graduated from high school.

Small world. My Pappaw and Mammaw worked the tower in Hamburg and also retired from the Arkansas Dept of Forestry. My Mammaw was supposedly a cracker jack at spotting fires and pinpointing the location based on the grid coordinate map they'd use in the tower.
The tower was dismantled many years ago and a cell phone tower stands in its' place now.
I miss those simpler times.
