BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming is pushing for the state to get rid of personal income taxes, which currently have a top rate of 4.25%.

He said that other Southern states like Texas, Tennessee and Florida have already done this. These places are attracting businesses and people leaving high-tax states like California and New York. He believes Louisiana isn’t seeing the same growth because it still has a personal income tax.

According to a news release from Fleming’s office, Louisiana’s population has barely grown in the last 12 years, especially compared to other Southern states. Fleming said eliminating the personal income tax would lead to more jobs, investments and economic growth.

Data analysis by financial tech company SmartAsset found that Louisiana’s income tax is a little under average when compared to all 50 states. Average state and local sales taxes, however, are about 9.54%. That’s the second-highest in the country.

Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax policy nonprofit, lists 43 states with income tax structures. Most, like Louisiana, have a graduated rate, so people who make more pay more. However, 14 states have a flat rate. Other states that don’t have an income tax include Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Fleming also said that Louisiana’s government is spending too much money. According to the news release, the budget has increased by 68% in the last six years while the population has stayed the same.

If the income tax is repealed, Fleming said it shouldn’t be replaced with other taxes.
He said this issue should be in next year’s fiscal session of the Louisiana Legislature or a special session dedicated to tax reform.

“Louisiana does not have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem,” Fleming said.

Also don't forget the "laundering tax payer money" problem

I don’t trust Louisiana officials to make up for it elsewhere in a fair and equitable way.

Breaking: Legislature increase inspection sticker from $18 a year, to $2700 a year.

Texas, Tennessee and Florida > Louisiana, and that's why people are moving there instead of Louisiana. We're the toilet bowl of the country at the tail end of the Mississippi.

I don't think a 4.25% income tax is the reason why Louisiana's population has not grown.

Lets start with the 500 person state attorney general's office that somehow still needs to outsource a massive amount of casework to private attorneys.

But everyone votes for Jeff and Liz so won't talk about how they are worst government bloaters out there because the more people they have under them the more power they feel like they have.

Uneducated, dirty, corrupt, crime ridden, humid, hurricane-prone.

The language, food and laissez faire culture aren’t covering the eyesores any more.

They will only triple your property tax, gasoline tax, and any other tax they can STEAL from the residents. They can't even fix the freakin potholes.

I'll tax the street
(If you try to sit, sit) I'll tax your seat
(If you get too cold, cold) I'll tax the heat
(If you take a walk, walk) I'll tax your feet

Sure they can....they choose not to. That city is a shite hole. Staying there is like a battered wife staying with an abusive husband.

You're in love with a city at it's best, an idea of what is can be and maybe was at one time. In reality, it doesn't give a shite about you or your contributions, only about what it can take from you.
