FlightAware

What the heck happened here? Looks like it got all the way down to almost 500 feet and then diverted. That’s pretty low to make that decision last minute.

Could have gone missed approach due to weather (thunderstorms, heavy rain, windshear, etc), but to have an alternate behind the line of weather they just flew through to get there doesn't make much sense at 1st glance. Hard to tell without knowing what the forecasts in the area were.

That happens somewhat frequently. I’m curious why Shreveport instead of Baton Rouge or Jackson since both are closer. Maybe it has to do with jetway availability.

FlightAware shows the plane left less than an hour after landing and going back to New Orleans. The weather looked worse at the second approach.

I can’t even imagine how pissed I’d be… final approach into Nola and then take back up in the air and land in Shreveport.

A few years ago, I was on the final leg of flying from Italy > NYC > Charlotte > Pensacola.

After hours of delay on the final flight, at around 9pm, we circled Pensacola airport a few times before the pilot announced that the weather was too bad to land and we would have to return to Charlotte and flight would be rescheduled the following morning.

I've been on one where landing was aborted (ATC issue and a plane was on the runway) but we just circled until we had a chance to land. We certainly didn't go to an airport several hours away. I can't imagine what happened- surely someone on this board was on or knows someone who was on this flight

ETA: Looks like they went back to New Orleans an hour later so I guess it could've been worse, but just seems weird

Imagine having to execute a go-around at 500' and then inform everyone aboard that you were taking them to Shreveport instead of wherever they actually wanted to be. No wonder so many of those guys end up drunks

I had a not distant cousin to this story but my last hub was Philly. And they chose to return to Scranton and make us take a greyhound bus home (maybe 2ish hours)

The most frustrating being it was late night and they had to wait like 2 hours in a closed airport for said bus to even show up

Felt like a lot to avoid putting us in a Philly hotel and doing the 45 min flight in the morning. Must’ve been some real logistics nightmare associated with that option.

Minimums is around 500' in Nola. Might not have been the pilot's choice if he wasn't established or couldn't see the runway by then.

Incorrect. The plane's actual destination was Shreveport. Apparently somebody (the pilot-in-command) in the cockpit wasn't paying attention so the plane ended up (most likely on final approach given the altitude) to MSY before the PIC realized the mistake.
