I can't stand smoking. It blows my mind that growing up smoking inside was the norm. Inside homes...inside restaurants...inside bars...inside cars. It wasn't uncommon for kids to show up to school smelling like cigarettes because their parents smoked at home and in the car on the way to school. I have vivid memories of going over to a buddies house we would always hang at and there was a thick cloud of smoke in the TV room from his parents just chain smoking all night.

I’m not sure I even know anyone who smokes inside their car anymore.

One day people will feel the same way about internal combustion engines

I hate it because you leave their house smelling like you smoked an entire pack!

Bought a house in April from somebody who chained smoked in their house. Took a lot of work and money to get the smell out, but we got it done. I think the smell turned enough people off we were able to get the house a little cheaper than we should of.

I still remember my first job working in a regional jail in 1999 and seeing inmates allowed to smoke in the day room and in their cell. It was banned the next year.

A guy who lives down the street from me. He looks and sounds like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. He used to come outside to smoke, but since he put his mom in a nursing home and she doesn’t live there anymore, he smokes inside the house now. I’m only about 65% sure he’s a serial killer.

My mother (78) recently quit smoking. Frankly, I can’t believe that she has and continues to be smoke free. Anyway, she moved into a little 900sq ft house about 15 yrs ago. I swear she sat in there with the doors and windows shut and smoked two packs a day. It was so bad that anything she gave us for Christmas had to be set outside for a couple of days or washed immediately before you could stand the smell of it. It was horrific.

I have an older uncle that does. Ever since my aunt died, he smokes inside. He mostly smokes a pipe so the smell isn't too bad. we have caught him tho hot boxin a small bathroom in the house....

I don't think anything short of gutting the house/insulation/HVAC/drywall/ carpet and replacing it all would work for a lifelong inside smoker.

When I was in School the teachers use to smoke in the lounge, and if you were a studen over 18 you could smoke outside during recess. I don't miss the days of going to a restaurant and having smokers 3' from you. The only bar I go to is also non smoking.
To answer your question I know of one older lady who smokes in her house.

My mom sneaks one every now and then in the kitchen and opens a window. I caught her a couple weeks ago when I stopped by.
Oh well, not my house.

My brother refuses to give up his cigarettes. He started smoking when he was in his early teens, like 1982, now he’s in his late 50s and I doubt he ever quits.
My BIL, who’s the same age as my brother, also smokes and has smoked for about the same amount of time. He’s recently been diagnosed with a throat tumor but refuses to either get treatment or even quit smoking.
I’m not around either of them much other than holidays. My brother does come to visit sometimes but he knows we don’t allow smoking inside.

Both of my parents smoked inside ‘til around 1990 when I graduated from high school. After that, they set up the obligatory outside smoking station consisting of lounge chairs with a concrete ashtray filled with sand between the chairs.
I’ve never smoked, but my grandmother accused me more than once of having sneaked a cigarette because I reeked of cigarette smoke when she was visiting us.
Regarding the OP, my current neighbor smoked inside her house until her teenage son got a brain tumor several years ago. She smokes on her back patio now.

What's the thinking behind not even getting treatment? That's...odd...

I had to do the math and it checks out.

Smoking is so trashy. I know/knew this dude that chain smoked and then would put on massive amount of stinky arse cologne thinking he was masking the stink of the tobacco. I wanted to tell him never told him why I refused to engage with his disgusting self... but didn't waste my time.

My FIL smoked 3.5 packs of filterless camels per day in the house. He started when he was 14 years old and quit cold turkey eleven years before he died.
He kept the last opened pack, with a crystal ash tray and cigarette lighter in the kitchen cabinet. I asked why he kept it and just said so he would have one available if he ever started up again.
My wife and I were helping with some spring cleaning and noticed that the acoustic tiles on the ceiling were actually once white and not the brownish color I thought they were.
