I feel like the entire Hunger Games series falls into this category. Good on so many levels. But it’s like they did some type of reverse editing process where the best scenes were 30 seconds instead of 1 minute; or 1 minute instead of 2. It had so much going for it but just fell short of what it could/should have been.

X-men

Epic opening to a pretty lame story/finish.

Hancock

Incredible first half that is completely ruined by the twist and second half. Easily could have been a top 5 superhero movie had it stuck w/the tone of the first half and avoided giving Hancock an origin.

As is I'll watch it a bit for the bits when he's still a heavy boozer but the moment Charlize Theron pops up?

Too be fair that perfectly explains the books.

I don’t know why I read them since I’m not a teenage girl, but I did. The 1st was solid albeit full of holes, the 2nd was okay and getting more ridiculous. The 3rd book was the worst book I’ve ever read and read like it was written by a 10 yr old

Was coming to say this. It had such potential then just fell off the rails towards the end.

I wouldn’t even say it is good..maybe average, but there is a great movie in there somewhere.

Yeah, that was a disappointment in that it was somehow less than the sum of all its great parts.

The issue, I think, is that they resorted to what might actually happen to a figure head (katniss) than what should happen in an action movie. Meaning they took her and tried to use her as a propaganda piece like our government has done with war heroes since WW2 instead of letting her be an actual super hero and fight the bad guys. While this might be closer to reality, it made the back end of that series very boring.

I'm gonna get downvoted for this but I'd put Dune in this category. Very good movies but I just can't help but feel like they missed the mark of other sci-fy/fantasy epics. They just didn't do a good enough job of world building like a star wars (I know star wars is an adaptation of Dune), Lord of the Rings, or even Harry Potter. It all felt very rushed and hollow. All action but not enough substance to give the action power.

The perfect answer.

I’ll throw in Jeepers Creepers. The first 30-40 minutes of that movie are incredible. Especially the opening sequence. And then the reveal etc. , just downhill from there.

Margin Call is fantastic but JC Chandor's A Most Violent Year and Triple Frontier are almost great movies.

Haven't seen all is lost.

He is a director who would have benefitted from the Sunday afternoon TNT rewatch

I think that one is already pretty great as it is but maybe didn't get enough attention

I aways felt like The usual suspects had more to give. I can't put my finger on what though. The body of the movie seemed lacking but that ending really brought it home.

Three Kings (George Clooney Iraq war movie). Seemed like the elements were there for a great movie. But not sure it quite reached it.

Prisoners. Villeneuve, Johannson, and Deakins brought their A-game to Sicario so I thought this one would be a blast too. It's good, but not as good as it should've been.
