Looking to purchase a new dog, as mine passed away last month, and I'm shocked at the prices I'm seeing. Now, I had my dog for 13 years and paid $200 for him at the time, but now that same breed is 1500-2500 everywhere. Even looking at other breeds that I like they are anywhere from 1000-4000 dollars, which is just insane to me.
I even looked into foster dogs, but those are now $400 or more, it seems, and plenty of hurdles to jump through. Filled out an application that had so many questions I felt like I was filling out a medical form again. It's insane the cost of buying a pet these days even through adoption.

It’s a big expense up front but you definitely get what you pay for. We messed up and got a shelter dog last time. Never again. Just bite the bullet and buy a good one.

It’s because BlackRock has bought up all the local breeders

2500 is a small price to pay for a friend of 13 years.

No reason why breeders can’t make a few bucks. Raising newborn pups is a lot of work and expense.

White girls make everything more expensive, because they'll pay for it.

Rescues are free and the best pals I’ve ever had.

Nothing like having a shitty dog for 13 years.

Not saying all shelter dogs are shitty though.

Once you pick one out, get pet insurance immediately. I pay 55/month and I have been reimbursed well over a grand in the past year. Definitely worth it for bigger breeds that incur bigger costs.

You could try to find a shelter puppy.

I feel bad for those grown shelter dogs. They are probably fine animals who have just had bad circumstances and make them protect themselves at all costs. But the danger of getting one is so high, especially if it will ever be around other dogs or people.

that’s a pretty broad generalization

our past four dogs were/are rescues. None cost us any money. We got a bloodhound thru a rescue group and three street pickups. All great dogs and loving family members.

all dogs are good dogs (except you know what)

Found two of my dogs on Craigslist. One was a free rescue miniature Schnauzer and the other was $400 for a Havanese-Maltese-Poodle mix.

Both have been great for us.

Our shelter dog has been a good companion, but has cost 4x more in vet bills than our purebred. Shelter dogs are generally healthier but it’s not a given.

So the purebred was 3500 and the shelter dog was 75. But with accumulated vet bills it’s about even.

Ride around town and just pick up a stray. Way cheaper.

I got a lab/German Shepherd mix from the shelter and she was only 8 months old. Best dog ever. Obviously don't get a pit or a chihuahua but plenty of good options for dogs at shelters.

The puppy I got from the shelter isn’t perfect, and it was a lot of work but she is the best companion you could ever look for in an animal or human.

I think it depends if you can get them when they’re young.

We bought a Shiba Inu from a breeder back in the late 90s before anyone knew what they were...

Now everyone knows them due to the memes and vids and prices are $$$$.

Lots of shelters/rescues do charge a fee to cover their costs.... pretty reasonable IMHO.

Not sure if we will get another dog. They are cheaper than a horse though!
