Do y’all read with a white/brown/pink noise in background?

There are many times I’m too distracted to read as deeply as I should. I learned to keep the TV and music off so I don’t start replacing the written word with song lyrics.

I almost always have one or the other on. Music during the afternoon and my wife will have TV on in the evening. They don't really bother me, especially TV, which I don't really care about. This, a computer, is a bigger distraction (reading Parable of the Sower as I type)

My typical Sunday afternoon forty years ago was spent reading on the couch, with the stereo playing and the Saints of other NFL game on the TV without sound.

When I read on the couch with family present, I slap in my buds and play "White Noise Three Hours Long" on Spotify.

I put on ASMR when I read. I find it helps my brain from getting distracted when I try to read so I actually recall stuff way better.

It depends on what kind of mindset/mood I'm in. If I'm reading in the evening before bed, I typically like it quiet.

But earlier in the day I might turn on some classical in the background. Or I'll read while the fiance is watching a show that I'm not really engaged in.

I prefer the quiet but I might actually try this.

I have a hard time even doing audiobooks on a road trip because my mind will wonder, reading with a TV on in the background is near impossible.

My wife and I have using YouTube on our TV for background noise while we read. Sometimes we do ambience videos, such as a beach scene with waves noise or cabins with rain noises. Other times we use movie scores or concerts, usually Hans Zimmer or John Williams, but always instrumental only. I find that it helps me focus

Thanks guys. I might go the 3 hour white noise. The ASMR sounds interesting, too.

the Halidon Music channel on youtube has a lot of good classical playlists. I'll usually put one of those on. It makes me feel scholarly AF.

She is my favorite ASMR artist and has a lot of different styles she will do that can help depending on what genre you are reading.

I can read with the TV on. I find music distracting. White noise would drive me to suicide.

I mainly put on the headphones and listen to Bach to block out my wife's way-too-loud shopping videos that she tunes into every night.

When I was a teenager, I would listen to Alice in Chains - Dirt while reading Dragonlance. I still get visuals from the story when I hear the music, 30 years later.
