40.1 percent of U.S. households pay no income tax

I saw this on another board and I’m blown away by this number.
households in the U.S. that paid no individual income tax in 2022
When you factor in tax credits, only about half of the households in the US pay any income tax at all. So only 59.9% of households in the US pay any income tax.
When it's all said and done, the bottom 60% gets paid by the government.
That is insane.
If you don’t pay taxes, you shouldn’t get a vote.

It would be immeasurably impactful for my family to just go ONE year without paying federal income taxes. Wish somehow that could become a thing to have once or twice in a lifetime to get a one year reprieve.

We have a large chunk of the population that never faces the consequences of their voting choice.
If their decisions were felt in tax policy they might vote accordingly.
This is why the franchise should be suspended for those on government assistance.

This is one of the tipping points that worries me about the future of our nation down the road. We are close to 50% plus paying no income taxes and voting against the others who do.
Abolish income tax and put it all on sales and property tax. That will still hit the higher income people but nobody will skate by completely.

Hate Obama, but I agree with him that everyone should have skin in the game.
If you're going to have income taxes, everyone should pay something.
No refundable tax credits.
Pay at least $100/month.

Fair Tax would fix 100% of this, would fully fund the government and it would fix a significant number of governmental societal cultural problems because 100% of citizens would have some kind of financial skin in the game.
I’m starting to come around to the flat tax fans’ way of thinking — 10% across the board.

Flat tax!
If you need proof our government is retarded the fact we don’t have a flat tax is all you need.

If I were in that 40% of non tax papers, I’d gladly give up my privilege to vote to those that pay taxes

The days of voting for the best candidate are gone. Voting for whatever keeps the entitlements gravy train going is the way now.

It's higher than 40%. More like 47% when eitc and the like are figured in.

Flat tax in a heart beat. But more has to be done…or the feds will just spend more. Limit government spending being #1. Or give bonuses to departments that finish a year below their budget. Even penalties for going above a budget.
Fire 80% of the IRS. No deductions to police.
The last person I listened to about a flat tax said 17% would allow the debt to begin to be paid off. I will gladly pay 17%.

I wonder how many posters we have here that fit in that category.

Finally, we come to the top 1%, another 1.5 million returns with earnings in excess of about $682,500. Their share of income taxes paid was 45.8%, not quite double their share of income. Their average tax rate was 25.9%. Among the tippy-top 0.1%, or 154,000 returns with earnings above about $3,775,500 a year, the average tax rate was similar, 25.7%.
The burden of income taxes, in other words, falls almost entirely on the top half of earners and disproportionately on the top 1%. Notice that tax rates rise steadily with income, a basic feature of a progressive code. The average income tax take is 10% or less for the middle class, which jumps to more than 25% for the highest earners.

Lots of voting consequences aside from income taxes.

Irrelevant. Talking about income tax. If you don't pay that, you should not have a voice.

This is why democrats win elections. Almost half or more want the party of entitlements in office.

When someone starts a thread questioning why we need to exempt tips from income tax, this is what they are thinking about.

If you wonder how could Americans fall for these insanely socialistic policies of Harris, think about this. A massive swath of the American people are simply voting themselves more of YOUR money,
