Anyone ever been to Saudi Arabia?

If so, how was it? Is it worth the trip to visit the historical places?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I don't know if it's the best time to visit that part of the world right now

Been there numerous times but for work...
For a family, I would say no.
I will start with the positives, some of the best food, juices, tea etc i have ever had in my life.
Jeddah is a great city to visit and sightsee.
Lots of activities outdoors in the winter out in the desert.
But the places you really want to go you need to be muslim, so if not, you miss the "must sees"

How easy is to get a tourist visa? Knew someone who went for work, and it was a bit involved to get a visa even for that.
This would be near the bottom of my list of places to go.

Go to Cairo instead. Maybe a river cruise on the Nile down to luxor.

Do they issue tourist visas? I thought they didn’t.

Make sure you know what date ranges responders are giving you in terms of their experiences. In the early 90s, they were squeezing out toothpaste tubes to check for booze. Now, men and women watching WWE live events! Woo!
This will of course be controversial, but Israel smokes KSA in terms of "historical" venues. Unless you're Muslim, you won't get into many "historical" locations anyway in KSA. Hit IL, Jordan, Egypt and Libya (which has supposedly more Roman ruins outside of Italy than any other country.) KSA would be lower on my list than Iran or Iraq. Maybe on the level of Oman or Yemen?
(if you're pondering living there) There are a ton of ways to game it (for a perm move), depending on where you live. Are you willing to fly to Abu Dhabi every weekend? Are you willing to find a compound with expats that like homebrew on other weekends?

Yeah, Jan-June 1991. Didn't really enjoy myself.

So many better places to travel in that region. Unless you are muslim there really is no point unless it's to make a shite ton of money for a few months then get out

Just started about a year ago. They're now building a number of fancy resorts on the Red Sea.
But, as others have said, Mecca is still very much off limits to non-Muslims, though some recent reports that I have seen suggest that the rules about Medina are no longer enforced.
But the only other real historical sites are the Nabatean sites in the north (similar to Petra).

Did you leave a review for the group that arranged your travel?

Only for work. Skip KSA and go to Jordan. Crowds are very light given the stupidity in the region.

I went last January.
Spent a few days in Al Ula. I hired a driver to take me from Aqaba Jordan over the border. Had an evisa which is easy to get online. Border control took an hour roughly.
Also hired a driver to the mysteriously perfectly split rock and other weird formations.
It was a nice trip because they are not hot on the tourist scene yet so it wasn’t hectic anywhere.

Same Sept 90- April 91 and again in 93-94 after a cruise ship and shore excursion to Somalia. Fun times. Go to Cairo, turkey or Israel.

Maybe on the level of Oman
Oman is a great visit. Beautiful rugged country, actual culture, a great capital city, very foreign, but warm people. Hard to beat getting in a car and just going wherever you want over mountains and wadis and coast.
Full disclosure - my info is 25 years old.

I wouldn’t mind going as it is but probably won’t unless they actually complete the Jeddah Tower. If they do, I am in.
