Wife has an old set now. Knives are dull as hell and some of them are broken. I think she got it from pampered chief or somewhere.

And recommendations on a decent set? Tired of trying to trim things up and having to saw my arm off.

TIA.

Victorinox makes a decent kitchen knife.

Not sure what your budget is, but if I had money to throw away on knives I would get the 16 or 26 piece Wustof Ikon knife block set.

Global is mostly what I use. Good to have a German chefs knife too.

Can't help with the broken knives, but you sure as hell can learn to sharpen the dull ones. I don't care what brand of knife you buy, they will all eventually dull with use and dull knives are more dangerous to use than sharp knives. A couple good wet stones and a steel and you could do your own sharpening at home.

As far as knife sets, the choices are staggering and vary in price from a couple hundred dollars for a knife set with block to hundreds just for a chef's knife.

My wife bought me a Faberware knife set and block about 15 yrs. ago since I had a lot of mismatched knives I was using. It has served me well and includes a heavy duty cleaver, 2 chef's knives (8 and 10 inch), boning knife, carving knife, serrated bread knife, kitchen shears, 4 types of paring knives, 10 steak knives, honing steel plus the wooden block I doubt she paid more than a couple hundred for it at the time.

I do my own sharpening so they are kept very sharp.

I also have a couple of Dexter knives that get used for cleaning fish and cutting up things when doing seafood boils and outdoor cooking and they too are great knives.

It’s hard to beat Mercer. Used by chefs worldwide and they have something for every budget.

Do you really want a whole set?

A chefs knife, a filet knife, and a serrated knife for bread/tomatoes is all I use 99% of the time. And honestly the serrated knife gets the least amount of usage. I have a couple of paring knives I’ve accumulated over the years, but they don’t get used now.

Dexter-Russell knives. A friend of mine who is a Chef recommended them to me. Good quality knives that won't break the bank. Easy to sharpen and keeps its edge well. I keep mine hair shaving sharp.

You can get away with 4 knives. A chef, butcher, boning and paring knives.

I love my Dexter-Russell knives. They do stay sharp and the textured handles are great for getting a good grip on them.

I also have 2 of their stainless steel oyster knives and they work better than any other oyster knife I've had over the years, and I've had plenty.

I've got a butt load of Shun and I like them all, but I primarily use just one: the Shun Premier Kiritsuke.

It is lighter and thinner than some of my other knifes, but it can perform the function of the Chef's Knife, the Santoku, and the Nakirri. Ye$, I have all tho$e and then $ome.

That being said, I use a cheap $40 teflon coated set for most of my day to day cooking, and only use the Shuns when I am cooking something more involved, but the cheap set has a bread knife and a serrated utility knife, and a tomato knife, and I rarely use them but it sure makes sense to have them in a cheaper set than the Shuns.

I also still often use an old Chicago Cutlery 8" butcher knife I've had since the 1980's.

Just get 3 or 4 knives. You don’t need a whole set. 6 or 8in chef knive. Paring knife. Filet knife. That’s all I have -bigger chef knife . You probably need a bread knife. Get a good sharpener.

Shun is my favorite, but it's not inexpensive. I have had my set for 14 years now and am about to send to get sharpened for only the second time. Amazing knives

My wife bought a set of Cutco knives from her cheese dick cousin over 20 years ago. The kid is still weird, but the knives have been worth every penny.

A friend's son signed up to sell them so we agreed to the in home sales pitch the new recruits have to do. Ten of them I think.

I knew I was going to buy something from him because he's a good kid. Made him work for it though.

We bought the petite carver and I have to admit it's a pretty nice knife. Very sharp serrated blade.

I'm glad I bought it but would not necessarily want a whole set.

The main knives I use daily are Victorinox. Good value, good balance/feel and easy to sharpen.

If I had to buy a set today it’d be Victorinox or Misen
