Most often I never comment, but a defensive coordinator for a team is allowed to be called coach, kids call coaches coach because they coach, Every coach is called coach. My elementary school kid calls the high school kids that help out coach.

I think the point is they're portraying it as if he was the head coach. I haven't once heard him described as "unpaid assistant coach".
