Allows for up four trains a day (two coming and two going). Prohibits expansion of service north and east (Mobile is the terminus).

Are people really wanting to go to either city thay bad?

This is a positive economic move
It’ll likely spur more links to travel to other spots along the gulf coast

I'd love to send my kids to grandma's and my wife and I ride a cabin train car from New Orleans to Jacksonville.... but it sounds like these morons want to terminate in Mobile for some dumbass reason

I could see the convenience of doing a late night train but the costs aren’t going to be cheap so it’s just not going to get much traffic. Another waste of taxpayer dollars.

Not if Mobile is the terminus.

can't understand the practicality of this whatsoever.

I’ve read some are worried it will bring in the ghetto who don’t drive for day trips to BSL and those areas nearby.

Will a one way trip take 4+ hours?
Posted on 8/6/24 at 4:05 pm to udtiger
Its like a 90 minute drive
Why would I do this?

A bunch of us are going NO to Mobile for a wedding next year. This could be the way.

Finally, Mobile can attend a real Mardi Gras.

I can explain some of the questions about this I think. Essentially this is a 3 year agreement. Operational costs are 3 million a year to be paid to Amtrak of which 1 million a year comes from the city, 1 million from the port and a million from the state. A few of the council members were skeptical of the deal and how much the city would be on the hook for because originally the city was going to be responsible for all 3 million I believe. The port and the state jumped in because with the agreement this allows for the release of 223 million dollars in federal grant funding of which 72 million will improve rail infrastructure for the port. Big win for the port which is growing. The 2 round trip services a day and terminus in mobile ensures that port services on the rail line will receive minimal interruptions for right now. In the future if all goes well expanding the Amtrak services can be revisited. I don’t know on the viability of passenger service in mobile and am skeptical of the economic impact it will have but with the new airport being located next to the train station who knows I guess. But ultimately, at least for the city, this was all about the port.

When I think of a lot of short routes that could actually be beneficial enough to gain traction, NOLA to Mobile is probably 10000th on the list.

That makes way more sense than anyone thinking this route would be worth a shite.
