World Record Pole Vaulter Gets Online Backlash for Not Representing USA

wedish pole vaulter Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis, a Louisiana-born dual citizen, was the star of an electric scene at the Paris Olympics on Monday, August 5, setting a new men's world record of 6.25 meters. But some Team USA fans weren't so thrilled about it.

"Let’s stop this Mondo Duplantis is Swedish stuff. That man is from Lafayette. Ain’t no one from Sweden ever been to the all-you-can-eat Popeyes," one fan wrote.

quote:
"His older brother Andreas represented Sweden in pole vaulting as well," Anshelm said. "I went via Facebook contacting Andreas, asking for the phone number of Greg, Mondo and Andreas' father, saying that I would like to have Mondo in the Swedish team. At that time, it was a 'no.' He wanted to represent the U.S. As a Swede, and maybe a bit stubborn and stupid, I thought, 'I may give him another call.'"
"What I did mention was that I was very happy if Greg would like to be in the national team as a coach. A couple of weeks later, Greg called me and said 'We're on.'"

Dude made a smart financial decision. Gonna make WAY more money being a T&F star in Sweden than the United States.

Louisiana has some great looking women, but give me Swedish women any day.

Are there not Americans competing on the Diamond circuit?

Ole recruiting trick, put dad on the payroll and son will follow

Difference here is Mondo’s dad is actually qualified. He’s been coaching other pole vault athletes for a long time.

The offer is slick AF.
It worked not having someone in between them.

I use to go to Lafayette just for that place. My friends thought I was there to hang out with them.

I obviously don't love it, but at least he didn't scamper off because he wasn't good enough to make the cut on the US Olympic team.

Someone said it elsewhere, but if this was the same story except he attended Alabama instead of LSU, this place would be livid.

Of course it would, but oh well.
I’m not an LSU fan. I understand why he made the decision. Don’t blame him one bit for making it.

Probably, but as a citizen of Sweden, I imagine he doesn’t have near the visa and tax problems a normal American citizen would have

Sweden or Lafayette LA… kid made the right choice.

I'm sure he wipes the American tears away with the many millions of dollars he made being a pole vaulter in Sweden where he is one of the country's most popular athletes.

Sweden tax rate for non-residents is 25%. There is not telling what the US and LA might demand from him by 4-15.

He supposedly spends winter in LA and summer in Sweden.

He just set the world record and in his interview he was all LSU.

Didn't realize the rules are so loose when it comes to which country one can represent.
