Short of a direct steroid injection, what’s the best way to relieve swollen ankle?

Why is it swollen?

Recent injury, ice and manual movement of the fluid.

Recent injury from overworking it. Moved a bunch of heavy equipment Wed and Thursday last week and it got pissed at me Thursday night.

Overstresswd the Achilles tendon.

Been taking pain meds and staying off it since then. Figured swelling would be going mostly away by now.

Glad I asked. I didn’t t think ice would still be effective at this point. Always thought that was early on to try to keep it from swelling in the first place.

It just swelled up without being twisted or sprained?

Honestly, when you say "been staying off of it" how much have you really stayed off of it?

Pain meds are not going to get the swelling down. It needs rest and ice. Lots of sessions with ice. not just once or twice a day.

Off of it all day, Friday, Saturday, except for about an hour of hobbling around with crutches, all day, Sunday, and now all day today.

I do a lot of software development and project management, so I’ve got more work. I can do from a laptop than I can shake a stick at.

And yes it just swelled up after those two days. But those were pretty strenuous, moving a couple hundred pound pieces of large equipment, on and off pallet jack pushing things with my foot stopping things with my foot, not something I normally do but maybe eight or nine times per year

Elevate the swollen ankles and apply ice. Consider taking a NSAID.

Ice, elevation, and movement without pain. Ankle pumps, moving in and out, even writing ABCs with foot.

RICE

Cover the ankle in uncooked rice. It will draw out all the fluids causing the swelling.

Keep your feet out of toilets.
