Yeah, but he averaged like 10 a game and played bigger than he was.

Didn't he get injured one year and we pretty much fell apart after that?

He wasn’t out there for the 3. He was out there for the baseline reverse layup. And defense.

Roland was solid. 2000 team was so vastly underrated - got a shite matchup in sweet 16 in New Mexico against Wisconsin.

One of the most underrated Tigers of all time! I loved watching that dude play.

I think the matchup was not bad on the surface but the way games were officiated that year in the tourney made it so, it was egregious. Wisconsin was allowed to hold, clutch and grab almost at will.
They finally lost to eventual champ Michigan St. in the semis 53-49 or some such score when Mateen Cleaves said, they were fouling us every play so we just started fouling them every play.
As for Roland I would not say he was underrated, in fact I thought he'd be more of a scorer than he was for us. But he was a great defender. Him getting hurt mid-season 2001 derailed that season for us.

Loved to watch him play defense

Dick Bennett is an American hero.

You may be right.
We were athletically superior to Wisconsin and IMHO better and more talented. But they were allowed to hold and clutch and grab so egregiously that it negated that advantage. It was such a hard game to watch because of it.
Now we maybe could have adjusted and played the same way defensively, but Brady's credo was always to defend without fouling, that would have gone against what we'd been doing all year, and I'll add we'd been doing it quite well.
I'm not the blame the ref guy but that's one game where I was really upset about the officiating....and that it really changed the complexion of the matchup. I can promise you it's a rarity for me, but I'll stand by this one.

Such a great team. Bright, Beshara….fun to watch, and the first time I remember getting excited about LSU BBall. I was too young for the Shaq years.
