Weigh-in controversy: Donkey rides spark debate on child obesity

Animal welfare vs. Shaming children
The owner of seaside donkey rides in England introduced a rule of weighing children before rides, sparking a heated debate about obesity. John Nuttall, the 61-year-old operator, claims that the new regulations are intended to protect the donkeys from being overloaded. Critics, however, accuse him of publicly shaming children instead of focusing on the real causes of the problem.

Good for the owner. Parents should be mad at themselves, not the owner.

The critics are correct. He should clearly be responsible for the diet and exercise habits of all children who may want to ride. Jeeez

Get him in charge of TSA. Forget weighing bags and charging more for that, let's weigh the passengers and make them buy two seats.

Donkeys can safely carry 20% of their body weight including the saddle and rider. This means that a miniature donkey weighing 300 pounds can carry 60 pounds

The parents have nobody to blame but themselves for letting their kids get that fat.

So? He's being responsible.

If he is guilty of discrimination or whatever the idiots want to claim, what about the amusement park people who "discriminate" due to height? If you want to dispute, the height issue is something that the individual has no control over,.....very similar to race.

Maybe I need to contact a lawyer!

The real cause of his problem is: fat kids bad for donkey back.

The end.

Good for him (and his animals).

What’s stupid is I bet the same people upset and bitching about this are the same exact ones who support all the PETA types of batshit insanity about protecting animals.

Then don’t get on scale and don’t ride. Problem solved. No “shaming”.

Is anyone claiming this now after that big kid fell through the chair on that amusement park free fall ride and died? The crack/thud of him hitting the pavement still haunts me.

Yes. Yes. Yes. About a year ago I had a JetBlue employee make me transfer LESS THAN ONE POUND of whatever was in my checked bag to my husband's suitcase. My face needed deliverance from the expression I gave that guy.

Meanwhile, obesity everywhere in sight, but I guess human weight is (D)ifferent.

The introduction of scales has been met with criticism from outraged mothers and the Obesity Health Alliance, a coalition of organisations fighting obesity. Katharine Jenner, director of the organisation, criticised the public weighing of children, calling it "absolutely unacceptable."
Liberal women are the most irrational people on the planet. Lets break a donkey's back so we don't upset a fat kid whose parents don't know when to take away the junk food and video games and make their kid go play outside.

The world needs more fat shaming. The rest of the world doesn't need to be inconvenienced because of people who are too big to ride a donkey or can't fit between the arm rests of a plane seat.

Are these critics going to buy him a new donkey that can carry heavier kids?

If the weight limit is posted, and you think your kid may be over the limit, the embarrassment your kid feels is your fault.

The parents could always sign their kids up for his camp
