“Grown men shouldn’t play video games”

I heard this for the first time in a while the other day. It’s an opinion that’s become less and less popular over time but you still hear it.
Obviously it’s way more common for adults to play video games than it used to be.
Some people say this is because of a difference in generations, but i always thought it was more to do with the evolution of gaming.
When older people grew up video games were much more simple. Galaga, Mario, Asteroids, etc. are all fun in their own right but pretty repetitive. Something that keeps you entertained while you’re playing it but not exactly advanced.
I’m 22 and enjoy video games and don’t plan to stop anytime soon, but I could never see myself playing Galaga every day.
Video games have gotten more and more advanced to the point where the top games have higher budgets than most Hollywood movies. They take 3-4 years to develop even with several hundred people working on them and sometimes a full team of writers working on the story.
Red Dead Redemption is a super detailed game where you can do just about anything. Last of Us has a better story than most movies. The NCAA video game dynasty mode is an awesome experience.
I really don’t see any reason why modern video games should be seen as a less legitimate form of entertainment than movies or sports.
TL;DR: I think the reason older people don’t think adults should play video games is because they didn’t grow up and experience the highly immersive and impressive form of entertainment that they’ve become

Cool. I don't have time to play video games, because I'm a man. I'm 40.

I think giving up your youthful hobbies will only accelerate your decline. Do what you love.

Or because adults have jobs, families, responsibilities, etc.

Sure we did. You ever experience the distinct shame of being laughed at by a dog because you missed shooting a duck?

There’s a growing fascination among young people to just sit and watch other people play video games. That, I don’t understand.

I haven’t played video games in 20 years. Bought a ps5 just for the ncaa game.
I suck at it and it makes me sad

Well, you had time to rack up over 10,000 posts in less than 5 years on here

There are a lot of niche simulation games available on PC as well. Farming Simulator and Truck Driving Simulator have a nice amount of followers. With that said, gaming is on the cheaper side of the hobby world. Even the price of a well built Gaming PC pales in comparison to auto racing, fishing or hunting.

I played some video games the other day. My kid was getting a little too big for his britches so I had to whoop his arse in Mario Kart.

Plenty of people have all that and still play games. It’s really a question of how you want to spend what free time you have. I work 45-55 hours a week. I probably manage to play for 1-2 hours 3x a week. If I had a family i probably wouldn’t play much.
