Need to grind some old stumps, some big roots, etc. only 4-5 that are around 8”. Most are small but mainly would be renting for the 8” ones. Are these going to be too much of a pain to use or are they decently effective ?

PIA unless they have good cutting inserts, those little machines are just barely adequate on power so they need to be sharp.

Thanks that’s what I was afraid of. Cleared out some more land at the house and the damn tallow tree stumps are pissing me off.

Agreed, hire someone. I rented a stump grinder for a volunteer project in Atlanta and thought I could get it safely out of my truck by myself. I lived, but only by dodging 20 something male stupidity.

It took way too long to grind stumps smaller than yours. If I knew what I was doing, it might have taken half the time.

I rented it and got a LOT done! the big stumps take a while of doing small passes, but it'll do the job!

I rented one before. Took forever, and somehow wore me the hell out. I thought it would do all the work, and I was wrong.
Wished I had just paid someone to do it, or rented a stump grinder that worked better.

If you're going to rent one, look for one at an industrial equipment rental company like United Rentals. I personally wouldn't trust a Home Depot unit.

I cut down 3-4 hardwoods a year on my farm, so a few years ago, I bought a Woodland Mills stump grinder that works on a tractor PTO. It works darn well. And you don't have to lug a machine around or worry about hurting yourself.

Everybody and their brother wants to borrow it when they find out I have it, so I keep it out of sight.

I had a few tallow trees in the yard taken out. I had the stump grinded. The damn roots kept sprouting new tress from them.
I finally had to dig around the root and pull them out with my truck. Made a mess. They came out pretty easy though.

I rented a vermeer walk behind from HD a couple of years ago. It was practically brand new. It worked great. Came on a trailer.

So in summary the consensus is (which I agree) the smaller options from HD are not worth your time. The largest “professional” rental option is worth it. These are self propelled and come with a trailer. Not all HD have the “professional” stump grinders available for rent.

Ok I’ll look into renting a larger one. I don’t really want to hire anyone. As I want to use it for some roots that I keep hitting with my mower deck, stuff like that. I’d rent for a day and probably discover new things to grind if the work goes faster than I anticipate. And in my experience stump grinding around here is crazy expensive.

I just looked up the self propelled 25hp is $320/ day from local Sunbelt. I prefer the other rental places but they are easy to check the price on.

Get the bigger tracked one. I did stumps as big or bigger than 18-20 inches. It's all hydraulic...if you can push a lever side to side and up and down you can get work done.

Where at? I have a guy that charges $125/hr and would knock out what you have in an hour or two. I’m bigly diy but for that price, he’s a no-brainer.

i've been quoted similar prices in Mandeville. i woudlnt be surprised if it's actually cheaper than a DIY with a professional grade rental
