Doing a kitchen remodel, need recommendations on a new gas cook top. Don’t want to break the bank, but also not looking for something cheap.

Any brands to stay away from?

I bought a Bosch 36 in. cooktop several years ago when I redid my kitchen and love it. It is the 5 burner model with 3 burners sized like a regular burner, one about 2/3 that size used for simmering things and the center burner is a large one that gets things up to a boil much quicker than all the others.

If I recall correctly, it cost me about $800 at the time.

Call Stantons in Baton Rouge, ask for Kathy, make an appointment. She will tell you what is best. Tell her I sent you.

Lower-end models certainly, anything with the standard capped round burners such as what GE and Samsung uses on their lower end stuff. Dacor, Thermador, GE Monogram, etc use burners with better profiles that heat better.

KitchenAid. I've got one and it works fine during normal use, but it's got this stupid solenoid safety mechanism that won't let you cook when the electricity is out. Makes having a gas stove totally useless after a hurricane. Check that any brand you look at doesn't have that, but I know for a fact my KitchenAid does.

Bought a mid-level Frigidaire a couple years ago and it’s been great. The igniter uses 120V and the valves backlight when they are turned on. Helps to see in case the fire isn’t burning and gas is flowing. You’ll see the light.

I’ve had Wolf, Kitchen Aid, Thermador, and Viking ranges.

I’d rate them in that order. KA and Thermador close though.

Have a Thermador with the same thing. You always know if gas is flowing even it it's not lit, although one has started dimming for some reason. Range will be 9 years old this October.
