fully expect the scheme to be worlds better than the previous season, as well as individual development and technique to be much improved. Baker knows how to scheme and work with personnel to work around weaknesses, and expect LB play be much improved across the board given how Baker was able to transform Damone Clark from decent with loads of potential into a damn good LB in a single season. I can easily the same transformation with Penn who has been fairly solid but inconsistent technique wise and sometimes gets lost in the wash. Weeks’ instincts will be maximized and Perkins will be all over the place position wise forcing Os to find him presnap.

Bo will have Guillory playing a much higher level at the 0 tech given his development history at UT, and will dramatically improve our DL technique assuming the kids buy in. Recall last year the DL really had no dedicated position coach after what’s-his-face went down with a heart attack and were coached up by a hodgepodge committee. Thats gone, and any improvement will profound and noticeable and have positive results on the field.

Say what you want about Raymond but good lord he’s worlds better than Steeples. Dude was way over his head, getting in the door on personality and recruiting chops, but I’ve never seen such poor technique and tackling from our CBs …constantly out of position pre snap, on the wrong foot, unable to break on the ball. Toviano will be night and day better with a year in and new scheme/coaching, as will Stamps. Same with the safeties.

It’ll be bend not break, but we’ll be 10-14 pts better than last year. And with each improvement confidence will grow. And that’s a huge factor bc trust in coaches and scheme is half the battle (something completely absent last year).

The issue is depth; the gods will have to have mercy on us health wise but if that pans out we’ll be salty.

Cautiously optimistic…

Coaching alone should provide a significant boost to the entire unit. I also believe the DL will be much better due to having to go against our elite OL all camp. As they say, a rising tide raises all ships.

Even if the talent isn't there yet, if Baker and Co can get the players comfortable and consistent in scheme and responsibilities, the defense will be significantly better. Last season it was beyond talent or scheme. Players looked completely lost way too many times.

Possibly, and I hope this is the case.

The flip side is they spend all camp being demoralized by the most dominate O line in the country, and come into the season with less confidence than what they started.

I don't think that's gonna happen, just saying there's two sides to that coin.

The only thing I would have a different opinion on is the "bend not break" type of defense.

I think it will be more of a boom or bust/high risk - high reward type defense. We know that Baker likes to play a very aggressive style. So I'm thinking we see a lot of negative plays (sacks, TFLs) that get offenses behind the sticks, but also prone to giving up the big play.

I think it'll help but it's hard to completely change things in year 1. Also House wasn't so bad his first year when he had better personnel. We still have a significant personnel issue on defense.

This didn't seem to help our offense much pre-Burrow.

The defense can't be worse, so it'll be better by default but my guess is it'll still struggle

This year I would just like to see improvement. If we can get the Defense into the Top50-75 (scoring, yards allowed, YPP, etc), I would consider that a success.

On a more general note, it would be lovely to NOT see multiple receivers running around wide open on seemingly every play. And tackling alone could improve our defense by itself.

This.

Go back and watch how many guys were out of position, on the wrong technique, and were no reacting with any anticipation at all. Sure there was a talent gap but it was clear that they were not understanding or at least not confident in the scheme and when the entire unit loses confidence and is playing on its heels, you see what we saw last year.

Coaching will absolutely have an impact.

I don't think we have many elite players on D this year. I'm expecting us to be average.

You do realize that just an average defense is significantly better than what LSU had last year, right.

I think it was no less than 4-5 years ago some on this board wanted Arandas head on a spike for a 33rd ranked defense

the scheme and coaching is more important than ever, so I agree.

Just concerned that the talent level isnt where its been historically. Not from top to bottom. They will be facing world-class offensive talent week to week and frankly, high level coaching (in a relative sense)

We really need Bo Davis to work some magic w the d line. Any word on how guys like Lee and Washington are looking?
Im less concerned w the secondary (albeit still concerned)

My thoughts are, last years defense was one of the worst I have ever seen at LSU against anyone that had any offense at all.

The new staff would have to be pretty bad to replicate the feat.

We will be improved against teams with average offenses, but we will still not slow down the good offenses that we face. Last year we couldn’t stop anyone. I expect teams like Ole Miss and Bama to score a bunch against us.

I can't believe they're still neutralizing Perkins at ILB

Baker doesn't play a bend not break defense.
