Take Paws Rescue

Has anyone on here actually adopt a pet from them? We have been trying for months with no success. Filled out the paperwork, emailed them, posted on their FB page and only once have we received a reply. Funny thing is they told us the pet we asked about was already adopted. Three weeks later it was back on their site.
Just found out two other people have never received replies. And of course, they have no phone #.

Most pet adoption places are money making scams for the owners

Adopted my black lab mix from them in 2020 during the height of Covid. Because she was 7-8 months old, she counted as a puppy and cost $300 to adopt (as opposed to $200 if they were a year old). I wasn’t happy about that, but I love my dog and wouldn’t change a thing.

We adopted a purebred yellow lab from them about six years ago. Great experience. Wonderful people.

A lot of those places do "benefactor dogs." Dogs that are more desirable get the fee raised to help more dogs or lower the fees on pit bulls lol

There are also breed specific rescue adoption sites for basically all breeds. Just decide what you're looking for, go to their Petsmart dog show, and drive it off the lot.

I fostered for them in the past, but wasn’t a member of the rescue. Some amazing dogs and all were scheduled for the needle had I not stepped up. My coordinator was awesome though and everything went well. He even allowed me to review apps and do the home checks and approve or decline or choose from multiple apps since I knew the dog. I also stayed in touch with applicant and answered any questions and moved it along fast. We usually had them adopted in 2 weeks. He listened to any concerns and provided all food and supplies. Can’t speak for the inner workings though. My guess is short handed and A doesn’t know what B is doing, and a lot of dogs. If you are in the area, go to the adoption events and you can speak with someone in person. Many of my dogs got adopted from those events.

Maybe not the same as the pet rescue I work with, but the one that runs our rescue is always overwhelmed with the task. It's a lot of paperwork, keeping up with the cats and dogs, handling applications, etc.
That is one reason for the delay.
Another reason is that your application may not meet strict standards that the rescue has set. Bitch all you want, but I've been around WAY too many terrible owners and dumped pets. We take in these pets, put in a lot of work. My wife and I just foster some pets, but I'd estimate together spend 5 HOURS PER DAY handling dozens of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies just to be adopted.
So, when we put in a lot of work, we want the best applicant to get the pet.
The one that goes over applications will verify how well you have taken care of past pets by contacting old veterinarians, kept up with vaccinations, etc.
That is one reason for the delay.

I volunteer for Take Paws and they definitely aren’t a scam. I don’t work in adoptions but I can tell you that they are a fully volunteer operation so it isn’t the most organized.
Most of their dogs are in foster homes since they have limited space at their facility. And the fosters get a lot of say in who adopts.
I’d recommend going down to their Banks St. location especially if you have a specific dog in mind.
Edit: they do adoption events at Wrong Iron most Wednesdays you can always go there as well.

I guess I didn't think about that aspect - them just being overwhelmed. Hopefully that's all it is.

$300 is a bargain for a young dog needed all vaccines, microchipping and fixing. You’ll pay more than $300 1st year vet stuff. If an adult that is HW pos., that adoption fee isn’t a drop in the bucket for what hw tx costa so adopter gets a good deal. One of my dogs just had a lump removed surgically. It was $300 just for that. And my vet is reasonable. Anywhere else I’d have expected $1000. TP is a good rescue. Just busy and they are volunteers who have day jobs. My fosters were vetted immediately. There was no dropping the ball. I mostly fostered pyr mixes and large plain brown dogs. Those plain browns would have died at shelter. Once they got to me and their personalities came out, they were adopted fast. Those cur and shep mixes are awesome.

No. Many dogs are pulled and have hw. Some come down with parvo from stress of shelter. Some have other medical issues. I didn’t know the inner workings of TP, but every dog got treated. A adoption fee does not cover hw treatment. They pulled some knowing how sick it was. They help alot of medicals. That benefactor fee goes to that fund. And they also pull undesirables who will have a more difficult time getting adopted. They don’t discriminate. For every one saved, so many die bc folks don’t fix their pets or dump on the roadside. There’s a lot of heartbreak in rescue. Nobody does it for the money, there is none, rescue done right.

Yes, I've adopted two from them. They don't have a facility - they are entirely foster based - all volunteers.
