Weird Advice from Doctor

Went to the Doc for a check up and I'm currently in my mid 30's 5'9 and 190lbs. I started talking to him about longevity and different vitamins/supplements/diets. He told me that really the only thing that matters right now is getting down to 170lbs. Basically said ignore all of the other youtube advice, get to 170lbs and then come back and we can talk about different diets and supplements. Felt like this was strange advice coming from a doctor.

Doesn’t sound all that strange. You’re not morbidly obese but are overweight for your height, and assuming you didn’t smell like Marlboro reds in his office, he prettymuch told you the best thing you can do to not start falling apart at 40.

While I agree that weight would be the number one consideration, I think supplements could be beneficial if for no other reason than establishing the habit.

Yeah my blood work came back fine. Testosterone came back a little low. I already do compound lifts. He basically just told me to lose 20lbs and then we can get more granular. I haven't been in the 170's since my mid 20's so its going to be an uphill battle.

If you don’t trust your doctor’s advice to the extent that you seek a second opinion from an anonymous offshoot of a college sports board, you should think about either a) follow his advice, or b) find another physician.

I agree with the doc.
You can get overwhelmed with information about longevity online. He knows that. You’ll hear his advice and compare it with the billionaire blueprint guy, Peter Attia, and the CarnivoreMD. His voice is one of many this day and age.
So his first step is acta non verba. Doesn’t matter if you get on a NOVOS protocol or get morning red light from the sunrise on the Swiss Alps if you can’t not be fat.

No matter what my weight is at my annual physicals my doctor always asks how much do I walk per day and at what pace. He stresses to keep moving and also agrees that weightlifting is cardio as well. So, I have a surprise for him this year when I weigh in at 194, nearly 15 pounds less than last year.

He’s giving you good advice. You’re asking him about the last 5% of optimization that won’t make a bit of difference until you’ve done the straightforward but hard things first.

Doesn't sound that weird, but ideally you need to be going off body composition. I can take your doctor's comments in either of two ways, a lazy, mindless throwaway statement he makes to all patients, or maybe he assessed you visually and correctly(his opinion, not mine, I have no idea what your body comp is, nor could I even guess)suggested you lose 20lbs.
You gotta be honest with yourself about how much body fat you're carrying. That's the answer.
Or he was caught off guard by your questions and doesn't even begin to know where to start talking about those topics so he punted.

It might have been delivered weird but the message isn’t strange.
His basic meaning is you are looking at window dressing to longevity and if you are serious about it then the biggest thing you can do is lose weight. Once the weight is in order then the little details can be dealt with.

He told you to lose weight. That’s solid advice. Most doctors these days will just get out the prescription pad and write a bunch of prescriptions so you can continue to be a lazy slob via medication. Lose the weight and go back to him or another doctor.

Yea I mean, before anything else body fat, which usually predicated by weight, tells you the most
Not sure why he considers this weird advice

I’m 5’10”
Was 184 lbs at 38.
Blood work and all came back not great but not horrible.
Lost 42 lbs on my own advice.
Next checkup the doctor was so impressed at my labs, he wanted to know how I did it so her could tell others.
So yeah, lose the weight.

BMI of 20.4
Not bad.
OP, when you see really old people, what do they look like?
The ones I see are always thin.

So you are 5’10 142? Already asked, I now see.
I was going under the assumption that we are just trying to stay under a 38” waist. I see now y’all are trying to look like marathon runners.

not me, frick all that. im trying to looked jacked and ripped and make all the other dads jealous why their wives are eye fricking me
i wouldnt allow myself to get below 170 ever and i would have to be getting ready for a competition for even getting that low. and i dont plan on running around in my underwear for other guys to judge me so I think im safe
i will go until i get down to 7/8% which i think will take me to 175 or so before i try and lean bulk for 8-9 months.

To have a 20 BMI, I would have to get down to 150 lbs.
I’d be worried the first sickness would reduce me to concentration camp body comp.
