A controversial competition in rural New Zealand that resembles a real-life Hunger Games, with feral cats as the targets, has dominated headlines after roughly 340 animals were killed—approximately 100 more than last year’s event.
The annual North Canterbury fundraising event, which wrapped up on Sunday 30 June 2024, allows both children and adults to hunt deer, pigs, ducks, possums, rabbits, and, since 2023, feral cats. This recent inclusion has understandably sparked a furious backlash from animal rights activists.

However, event organiser Matt Bailey said the feline category was created to help manage feral cats, which threaten native wildlife and carry diseases that endanger farmers’ livestock, stating: “These are possessed by the devil or the like the devil on methamphetamine. These are feral wild beasts. They will try and attack you, if you get your hand near the cage, they will try and have you, you can see the evil in their eyes.”

They don’t have a ton of native species there. Europeans brought in stoats and cats and things like that a century or so ago and it’s done a number on their wild populations.

My kiwi friend invited me to visit, told me we'd "slay a ton of pussy".
Not what I expected but i still came.

Praying Hurricane Beryl makes a swift turn and wipes out NZ and it’s people.

Your brain is completely broken.

quote:Because they have an estimated population of 2.4MM feral cats that have led to the extinction or near extinction of nearly 100 native species and subspecies? This isn't an open cat season to kill any and all cats including some families 'Mr Whiskers", nor a native population. The regulations seem fair, and while I can understand people not liking it, the conservationists of New Zealand do have a responsibility to the native wildlife over what seems to have become far more than a nuisance non-native species.

It's highly unfortunate, but feral cats breed like crazy and kill lots of other animals. They are natural predators. 100% agree it's far more important to preserve your native wild life than spare millions of cats.

This could turn into that Simpson's skit if someone uses feral dogs.

Not the smart way.
It's more effective to trap, spay/neuter, vaccinate, and release. They'll claim and defend territory but not make more ferals.
This is just playing Whack A Mole.

New Zealand does both a hunting season as well as having year round TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) program. The goal is to eliminate the feral cat population to protect the native wildlife. Simply having a TNR program or a hunting program by itself would not work for what they are trying to do, and what I would argue they have a responsibility to do to protect native species.

I saw some libs talking about moving to New Zealand because of Trump.
They like how there are a lot of Europeans and Asians there and it seems like a great place to live.
