How do you feel about college football fans rooting for a team but didn't attend?

Like a Notre Dame fan but they live in Alabama.

Or an LSU fan because of Joe Burrow.

Honestly just dont be a dick. From my end, it would be shitty of me to gatekeep Alabama fandom from a guy that has lived in the state for decades

Not that it ever really mattered but matters even less now in this era of college football, the players themselves barely have any connection to the school anymore.

If they're catholic or spent significant time in Indiana that's fine.

If they're under 20 and that's the guy they liked that really got them rooting for a college team for the first time that's fine. If they're older than that and just team hopping that's dumb.

Notre Dame had the Catholic following around the US, so I understand it.

Rooting for teams in other states where you have no connection to whatsoever reeks of front runners; where you pick the team because they are winning and your local team is not.

This.

It is funny, though, watching Walmart Wolverines try and talk shite about the academics of other B1G schools, when they themselves never progressed past high school.

What if people pick a shitty team? And then that team eventually gets good?

What percentage of college football fans attended the school they are a fan of? 5-10%? It's not very high.

Small private schools that have a history of winning? Probably that low

Big state schools is probably closer to 50% just due to size but idk

It's a bit cringey to cheer for the rival of the team whose city you reside in when you have no ties to said rival (a New Orleans falcon fan, a Baton Rouge Alabama fan, etc) but for the most part, let people cheer for who they want. It doesn't really matter to me.

Don’t care. As long as you aren’t an obnoxious a-hole, root for whomever you like.

My family are all LSU fans, have been for multiple generations. Our family has had season tickets for football since the 50s, baseball/basketball since the 80s. Everyone in our family didn't attend LSU for college but remained fans. I don't find it weird. I honestly would find it weirder if anyone changed who they were fans of.

At the end of the day, I view being a fan of a sports team(s) in a different vein.

I can tell you one thing, these big state universities rely on the money coming in from people who didn't go to school there.

Some of the most passionate LSU fans I know didn't attend the school, and not because they couldn't get in. Some people decide to take a different path.

Now if you're a sidewalk fan and you want to talk shite, you've opened yourself up to be ridiculed.

Every fan is entitled to an opinion, regardless of their alum status. But let's be honest, it's not fun when casuals talk shite. That gets me more than sidewalk fans chirping.

I bet that at least 1/3 of the LSU fans in Tiger Stadium any given game didn't actually attend school at LSU. Lots of locals who either didn't go to college or went to a college without major athletic programs. Are they not supposed to be allowed to root for a team that plays at the highest level of college sports?

Even better. If you become a fan of a team while they're shitty and stick with them, you're a real fan.

There was a real proliferation of Bama fans in this area who didn't attend school there and never lived in Alabama after Saban turned them into a powerhouse. Gonna be real curious to see how many of them stick with the Tide or switch team allegiances if the level of success declines in the coming years. Bandwagon fans rightly deserve to be mocked.

I graduated from LSU, now retired, and a huge Tiger fan. My kids went to LSU, Colorado, Mizzou, and Sam Houston. We now live in Nashville and have a place down on Lake Martin, AL. Nothing will replace my Tiger pride, but I’m also a big fan of the schools above and also a fan of Auburn when I’m at the lake. I’m actually wearing an Auburn Tshirt right now.

Just be a good fan for whatever team you chose and not a jackass.

Seeing different fans across the country is what makes it fun. Seeing jackasses, regardless of being an alumni, doesn’t.
