Day trips from Boston

We’re heading to Boston at the end of July for a week. We’d like to do some day trips out of town for some of those days. We’re interested in Salem, Lexington and Concord, Walden Pond, Quincy and Plymouth. Obviously we can’t do all of those. What are your top recommendations of those? Rent a car or hop a tour? I’m not opposed to checking out of Boston and staying out of town for 2 days and then going back to Boston to catch the train home. Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

Of that list, Plymouth by a mile.
Salem is very underwhelming, and for the life of me I don’t know why anyone would want to do a day trip to Quincy.
If you’re willing to go further, consider Newport, RI.

We rented a car and did a day trip to Newport. Had a great meal, toured the McMansions from the gilded age. It was a great trip.

Walden sounds better than it is. Bit of a letdown.

“She asked me to kiss her where it smells. So I took her to Allston.”
Providence has cool stuff and some excellent Italian food on federal hill. Worth a day trip imo. You could catch the train out of south station.

Agreed with leaving Plymouth off the list. Not much there and was underwhelming overall.
Definitely head to Newport. The mansion tours, food, shops, and the marina are worth the extra drive time.

Portsmouth, NH is a nice town and different enough from the others imo

Salem big tourist trap but if you wanted to see it you could add stops in rockport, Marblehead and Gloucester and make a day out of those places
Plymouth is a waste of time
Newport is a cool trip
You can’t beat history of Lexington and concord and those are not far at all from Boston, definitely book a tour as it’s a lot harder finding all the stops if you did it yourself

Abita, I’ll be in Boston in August. Going to a game at Fenway. I’ve been to Boston a few times and have been to the aquarium, done the freedom trail, seen Harvard & MIT, been to the harbor and Back Bay and done the duck boat tour.
What would you do with a free Saturday? Looking to stay in town. Was thinking of doing the Sam Adams Brewery tour. TIA

Southern Maine is great and Newport if you want to see the McMansions. I went a couple years ago and spent 3-4 days in southern Maine, NH, and Vermont. Beautiful country.

If you’re wanting to do a brewery tour, I would recommend Harpoon over Sam Adams. Sam’s beer isn’t very good and it’s a tourist trap. Harpoon’s pretzels are the best and worth going there alone, plus their beer is better and it’s in a more convenient location.
If you’re just wanting to have some good beer, check out Lamplighter or trillium.

Ferry to P-town
if you are talking about Provincetown, there will definitely be a lot of fairies there in the summer trying to take you to P-Town.
We did our last trip before our first child was born and it was at the tail end of the summer. If you are into leather attire, that town is the place for you.

agree Salem is a tourist trap but it can be a fun stop for kids. easy way to kill an hour or two and close to Boston. Portsmouth is a cool town.

We’ve been to Harpoon before. And not necessarily looking for a brewery. Just something to do with a free day.
Is Trillium the brewery that used to just sell bottles/cans and could only let 5-6 people in at a time, and there was always a long line to buy from them?

That is the old school system. That small building is now strictly their front office. This is their new setup in the Seaport. 3 floors with a roofdeck and full restaurant. The food is fantastic.

Abita, what would you recommend as far as public transit tickets/passes for 4 days? Just buy as needed?

I've always just used the T as necessary and haven't bought a pass
Between uber and T you can get anywhere you want around Boston

I would just buy T passes as necessary. The new system is being put online now to let you just tap your credit card at the turnstyle.
