New York Times names NOLA pizzeria one of the top 22 in the nation

Friends,
While it has been some time since we last were in touch, know that each of you is constantly on my mind and heart and in my prayers. My travels and writing have kept me quite busy in recent months, but I awoke this morning to my paper copy of the world’s best paper, The New York Times, who is trailed only slightly by The Wall Street Journal. Both, along with the Lectionary’s readings, are worth a full read before the public day begins.
Brett Anderson has again decided to troll us. His naming of R&O, Dolce Vita, Domenica, Delicious, Venezia, and Wood as New Orleans’s best in Where to Eat Pizza published by Phaidon was evidence enough to any knowledgeable pizza men and women that pizza is not Anderson’s specialty.
This time, he has been bolder to mock American pizza with a national top 22 pizzerias list. Arguably the most laughable of his inclusion are three. St Pizza downtown is a solid pizzeria and even has earned a spot in my Top 10 pizzas of the NOLA Metro. But it has no place in a national list. It would not be in my Top 500.
Another of his tantalizing absurd picks is Lena Pizza and Bagels. While I will agree that this Cleveland, MS pizzeria serves a good bagel, I would suggest it would struggle to stay open in NY for more than a few months. One can assume he included it because he has this strange obsession with the Delta and because no one in New York will make the trip there and be able to laugh about such a ridiculous choice.
Finally, Pizza Bianco in Phoenix might have been a reasonable choice in 1998 before the Neapolitan movement hit its stride in America. However, in 2024, it is not a top 100 Neapolitan pizzeria in our land. It rested on its laurels and focused on expansion. All the while, the downtown location has fallen and fallen. I have been here three times now, most recently this Spring, and each worse than the previous. I can quickly name 25 Neapolitan pizzerias in NY, where that style took time to root and still is snubbed by native New Yorkers, that are superior to Bianco today. Brett, please consult with Mother and me before writing about pizza again.
I have no updates on the F-350 and tour company, but will keep each of you posted.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

You've been gone 7 months and were remiss in spreading the Christmas spirit last season.

My Dear Friend,
It does my heart good to see your post. I was commenting to brother just recently that it seems that you had been otherwise engaged and perhaps too distracted to adequately post with the verve and insight that we should be accustomed to. I do hope and pray that mother and uncle are well. Hope all is well.
As to the subject at hand. Pizza is so subjective and given to whim and popularity. What makes a good pizza? I personally like my pizza with a little more sauce than is commonly used at places like Domenica. I used to say Brick Oven in Kenner did a good job, but I fear that I was the only one who got the extra sauce as well as other things due to my personal relationship with the owner and he would personally oversee the making of my Liberta Pizza.
However, my choice for the most consistent and best pizza....maybe in the continental U.S. and Montreal is a little small pizzeria in the town of Bernardsville, NJ. Mr Sal who owns the place is an artist in his understatement of the humble neapolitan gastronomic delight. He refuses to divulge his secrets to those of us who succumb to his evil, yet delicious creations.
Please post more, friend. Your vignettes are always appreciated and give a much needed respite to the TD OT lounge . Your prose is needed now in this season more than ever

Friend,
How’s mother doing? Is her favorite pizza still sausage? I always remembered her being very fond of a big thick salty piece of meat.

Last October when I was going to NOLA you told me there is no good pizza there. In this post, you insist there is. Not top in the country, but good nonetheless.
Why did you lie to me?

A TulaneLSU Top 500 list would be epic.
Seriously, please don't do this.

I will credit where due. It’s really good.
They spent a LOT of money on that and Patron Saint in a prime location so I guess the prices aren’t shocking.
Ironically, the wines at Patron Saint are very affordable.

We always stay at the st Vincent for NYE so I’ll make it a point to get there. If it’s good pizza I’m all in
The pizza situation in Hammond right now is a travesty. I couldn’t tell you the last time I had an exceptional pizza, I’m kinda jonesing for one

Friend (if I may be so bold),
I wanted to let you know Christmas season was not the same without your posts last year.
