Is it travel ball or is it high school ball that colleges look at?

On one hand u can be on a crappy high school team where not everyone is committed to the sport cuz either they play multiple sports or they dont really play travel ball or have that experience or they mostly suck.
On the other hand, u play the high school sport and you are really good but ur family doesnt have the means to play travel ball. Thus u lose that experience playing against good competition and playing in showcases.
My question is for sports in general…basketball, softball, baseball and football

You trying to go to LSU, Arkansas, Florida for baseball?
Then you are playing travel, Perfect Game tournaments and showcases, etc. It’s that simple. Most kids being recruited by these schools are also upper round MLB draft risks. You don’t get there by playing three months a year at a random high school, even a good baseball high school.
To be that good , they are playing all year and non-stop. Basketball is the same with AAU.
Football, you don’t have to their version of travel of 7on7 probably, but you’re always going to camps at every possible school you can. If you’re a late bloomer, 7on7 might be needed so you have more chances against elite recruits.

high school ball
There are guys and girls who get recruited who do not do travel ball, camps, or showcases. It is just a lot harder and as a player and family you really need to push with HUDL and getting stuff in front of coaches. In this era of NIL and transfers I would push hard for G5 and FCS schools as the P4/5 don't recruit HS athletes like they used to. Not playing outside of HS ball if the family doesn't have the means can still lead to D1, it's just going to take effort, and not feeling distraught when you get an offer from Tarleton St or Central Arkansas instead of A&M or LSU. Also having the grades and scores to show you are not going to have any trouble qualifying. Is it harder? Yes. Does it still happen? Yes, every cycle, just don't be discouraged by an offer because it isn't the SEC, or even if it's not D1. In this NIL and transfer era talent will still rise and a kid with talent who works his or her arse off will still rise to the top. The only HS route just may take a little longer.

Neither. It’s about the individuals ability.
Can you touch 97 and throw three pitches for a strike? Yeskie is giving you a call.

Seems like in all major college sports, it's camps, camps, and more camps, that get you recruited.

Coaches attend more Travel ball games because its in the offseason. They do make games in high school ball, which they consider more important as far as a team player aspect. They look at Travel ball as a showcase. If you can play they will find you.

Travel ball is where you go to get the most eyes on you. That said, if you're that talented they'll find you one way or another. Also if good enough, you'll find your way onto a travel team whether you can afford it or not. Somebody affiliated with one team or another will take care of that.

Camps give the coaches an opportunity to gauge how coachable a kid is in person.
It's part of the picture, but it's not the whole picture.

Travel ball (baseball and softball) and club ball (volleyball's version) is where college coaches and recruiters are able to see the most athletes all in one trip. My experience is typically from those travel tournaments, the recruiters are able to make a list of athletes that catch their eyes.
Then like a poster above said, they may then attend a game where the kid is playing on the high school team just to maybe see the type teammate they are with a team they're with for three to four years. The travel/club ball tends to have more roster turnover.

95% travel ball
5% a coach could do some recon and backdoor questioning to a high school coach etc.

Short answer is both.
Long answer:
(Baseball and softball) College coaches love to identify and connect with top talent at “travel/ showcase” events because it’s a target rich environment. These showcases give them a list of prospects, they ID the prospects in their ranking range, and go scout.
Once they connect and ID a potential recruit, they watch EVERYTHING they do in HS to validate what they saw at the showcase.
In addition, they will also scout top HS programs known for producing talent because there’s always somebody there and it’s not a waste of time. They also leverage relationships with coaches they trust to turn them on to sleepers and the get reports on kids

This is for baseball. Football would be the other way around, except in most cases 100% high school and 0% “travel ball”. But as one poster stated, camps in the summer do matter quite a bit in football.

In my experience…kids go to two kinds of camps…ranking camps and instructional camps. The ranking camp coach is much less personal, your instructional coach is effectively your lead recruiter…and he should have national reach. College coaches reach out to both the ranking service and your personal/instructional coaches and that’s how you get private invites. The private invite is usually a handful of kids trying out for the same spot, been as many as 15 and as small as 1. How you do at the private invite is EVERYTHING. How you act, how your parents act, how you perform, how you perform under stress, how you perform after you mess up.
Good luck, it’s crazy.
