I’ve decided and can’t pretend anymore: NIRVANA is the MOST OVERRATED 90s bands

Teen of the 90s here.
Love my grunge and metal.
But after further review and the constant hammering of Nirvana as the torch bearer of that era, i can honestly say they sucked.
Smells like Teen Spirit is terrible.
I can only summize that the love fest that is Nirvana is because Cobain killed himself.
Additionally, I love the Foos. Great songs. Grohl is awesome.
Without Cobain ending himself, we may not have gotten Foo Fighters. So I guess there is a silver lining.

I'm a little older than you. I understand what you're saying. If we just limit it to the Seattle and Seattle-adjacent bands, I have Nirvana pretty far down the list, probably last of the Big 4 (assuming everyone agrees, even if we reject the "grunge" label as being a creation of the record companies in order to have a product to "sell", that the Big 4 are: Soundgarden, AIC, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam, with maybe STP being #5).
Having said that - there is no question that the success of Teen Spirit/Nevermind changed the music industry effectively overnight. It was all anyone talked about for about a year. You and I lived through it and it actually happened.
So, while music is inherently subjective, and we probably agree on a lot of things in that regard, it is inarguable that Nirvana was the most "significant" rock band as far as permanent change to the cultural landscape since Pink Floyd and maybe the Beatles.
That is just indisputable, IMHO.

They may get a bit more credit than they deserve for the shift in music then, but they absolutely do not suck. Yes, a few songs from Nevermind are overplayed. Hell, quite a few Zeppelin songs are overplayed. Doesn’t mean that Zeppelin sucks.

I’m not a huge Nirvana fan but I certainly don’t think they suck. That’s a ridiculous statement.
You think this song sucks?

I like your list with Nirvana being further down the line.
“Sucked” was a tad harsh. They no doubt had a significant impact on music on our era.
AIC in my top 2-3 as well

Don’t know about overrated, but their music for me is depressing as hell. Never in the mood to spin their music as I was in the past. Gives me bad vibes.

Truth. I was 17 years old in 1991 when Nevermind came out. They always sucked

I grew up in the 90s and listened to it all growing up...cant do it anymore for the same reasons, puts me in a bad mood
I think the music of that time was a reflection of the times and changes in this country. Two parents working hard in the house hold not being around much and the kids being affected by it writing some music to deal with the unhappiness that came with it

You have a lot to learn young man. Few bands lead the charge while changing music history. Cobain stayed true to the end. He was going after a Pixie's sound, and surpassed it. His lyrics and riffs are timeless. Add in his style, and attitude, and he was the perfect front man. The "love fest" had zero to do with his passing. They were damn near in the "Beatle-mania" atmosphere for a few years prior to his passing.

For sure. Especially for people who didn't live in that time period

That's because Kurt was a mopey little bitch and it showed in the shitty, depressing music he wrote.

Funny. I’m a little older than you. When Nirvana broke out on the national scene I hated them. For many years I thought they were overrated low-talent angst-posers.
In the past few years I’ve come around a little bit and can appreciate some of what they were doing and looking back, the doors they opened. However, out of the group of bands that get lumped together from that time (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden) I still find them the least enjoyable to listen to. And it isn’t close.

I’ve seen this take so many damn times on this board, that there is starting to be an argument that Nirvana is UNDERRATED

Sounds like you like vanilla pop music.

They were an LA rock band not a Seattle adjacent grunge band.

Disagree... Even though I listened to them growing up (not because loved it but because they were popular and the thing) I thought they were overated and not as great as people said up until about a year ago.
Read Grohls book and then did a few listens back through their catalog and I have to say, Nevermind may be one of the only albums that has 5 consecutive bangers on it. Polly is the first track that is questionable, then immediately into territorial and drain you.

This tells us everything that we need to know about your musical taste, and how it shouldn't be trusted. The foo fighters sound is so generic and pop oriented. I can't understand how the drummer in the aneurysm video above is the same person that went on to make the crappy sounding vanilla "rock" music that we hear now.

I tend to agree... Nirvana is really the only band from that scene that I ever really liked and still listen too.. of the bigger bands, I should say..
I just listened to In Utero again recently, after Albini's passing, and its still a great record that sounds amazing!
I rarely feel the need to pull out Nevermind... while I like most of the songs, that one was just way overplayed and I never cared that much for Vig's production of that record..

If I corrected you to say San Diego, that would be quibbling. For our purposes here, STP was considered grunge by the record companies and radio stations. I appreciate they had no real Seattle connection (frankly, they had as many members from New Jersey than they did California, as it was a San Diego band, founded by two brothers from New Jersey and 2 cats from San Jose).
I mean, it would be incorrect to call the Chili Peppers or Rage "grunge", but in their own way they are arguably adjacent to that scene, being part of the alternative rock scene that existed when Nevermind blew up, plus various other connections (e.g. Audioslave). They're different enough to avoid the label, but STP isn't, IMHO (and many folks).
