Wild story from Uber driver - kinda sums up some of this country's issues

Needed a ride to the shop to get my truck.
Uber driver was a senior British guy. We start small talking and he tells me it's his first time driving in 10 weeks.
Here's why:
He lives in a semi rural area of Texas near Canyon Lake on about 2 acres. This is not a high crime area at all. Hill Country and not near any big city cultcha. Middle to upper middle class area, with lots of upper class ranches sprinkled in.
He goes to sleep one night and is woken up by his pet pig (not making this shite up), who starts huffing at the door.
Before he knows what's really happening, his bedroom door opens, and a man enters. He reaches for his gun safe next to his bed. As he does this the home invader opens fire with a 22 pistol.
Hits him 4 times. Twice in the upper leg (I saw the scars), once in the side and one that shatters his hip. He manages to get his gun out and returns fire. Three shots. One to the perp's gut, one to the chest and one to the forehead which dropped him.
The victim frantically asks his wife, who was next to him, if she's ok. Fortunately, she's unharmed and that's the last thing he remembers before waking up in the ambulance and then again in the hospital.
Good news is he killed the perp and survived. Bad news is he may always have a limp, was in excruciating pain for more than a month but here's the kicker - he didn't have health insurance and has a $225K bill. Would have been $300K but he said the surgeon dropped his fee based on the circumstances and because he, like the victim, was ex military.
Driver has no idea who the guy was or why he came to his house and tried to kill him. He crawled in through the pig's doggy door.
What are the fricking odds of a young black male even being in this area? You could go a month here and not see a black guy in that area. So random and scary.
TLDR: Even in the country in an all-white area, it's still not totally safe, and you get shot and have to go into debt for the medical bills.
Guy was really cool and upbeat about the situation since he survived and wife was unharmed. Said he hasn't lost a wink of sleep over killing the piece of shite. Just sucks he's now screwed because of some worthless thug with no recourse.

There's a lot of meth heads in that area. I have friends who wanted to get lake houses out there but decided against it because of break ins.

Yeah, I'd check local news and if story is true someone should start a go fund me for him. This guy would be more deserving than most.
