An 83-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when she was gored Saturday by a bison in the famed Yellowstone National Park, officials said Monday in a news release.
The bison was “defending its space” when It came within a few feet of her and then used its horns to lift the Greenville, South Carolina, woman about a foot off the ground, park officials said.
The incident happened near the Storm Point Trail at Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming, according to the release. Park emergency responders took the woman to Lake Medical Clinic in Village Lake, and then she was then flown by helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
“Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” Yellowstone National Park officials said. Though the animals are usually not aggressive, they will defend “their space when threatened,” park officials said.
“(Bison) are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” the release reads.
Park says people should stay at least 25 yards from bison
National parks can pose dangers to visitors, especially those who don’t heed warnings about wildlife and natural hazards.
Yellowstone issues cautionary advice, telling visitors to remember its animals “are wild and can be dangerous” when approached.
“When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk, parking lot or in a developed area, give it space. It is your responsibility to stay more than 25 yards … away from all large animals – bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes – and at least 100 yards … away from bears and wolves,” the park said in Monday’s news release.
Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, the park says. Despite their bulk, they are considered agile and can jump over objects about 5 feet high.
Park visitors are also being warned this week that elk with calves can be extremely dangerous.
“Be alert, especially this time of year around Mammoth Hot Springs. Elk calves may be hidden close to buildings, under or next to vehicles, and around blind corners,” park officials said in an alert on their website.

If you a see a bison in real life…that’s the size of a small SUV….the first thought that should go through your mind is “there’s no way I’m getting near that thing”.

As she lay there bleeding she thought she was dying, turned to her boy and said...

Was at Custer State Park in the Black Hills last week and had a bison walk up to the car and practically stick his head in the window. It was within a foot. Just snorted and walked off. Was in the middle of a herd of at least 100 head of bison. It was cool as hell.

Media needs to stop “humanizing” dangerous wild animals on TV, movies, children’s books etc.. These animals are characterized as sweet, soft and cuddly. They want mostly to be left alone or they can and will frick you up………….unless of course they happen to view you as a meal. Then they will frick you up……….then eat your arse.

This is equivalent to the Covid 6 foot rule, a grizzly boar or sow will cover a 100 yds. in under 4 seconds. Bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, & coyotes would be on you in the blink of an eye at 25 yds. Good news being that Yellowstone & Grand Tetons do NOT put down wildlife due to a “natural “ attack, defending their turf or off-spring, only those deemed predatory.

Grizzly Bear chases down band of wild horses in Canadian Rockies.

Do you really need someone to tell you to keep your distance from a 2000 pound wild animal?
Just let them get close and find out.

We went to Yellowstone. My wife wanted a buffalo pic. We saw some and stopped to get some pics. Psycho wife is stalking this damn buffalo like she's part Sioux Indian. Anyway, she got well within the 25 yd rule mentioned here to get a freaking pic. I got a great shot of her sneaking up on the thing because I'm WAY in the back.
Of course, we see this guy sitting on the side of the road and just drove right up to him. No need to go pet one.

we were in yellowstone last summer. driving through we came across about 2 dozen sitting in a field about 300 hundred yads from the road. We stopped and stood by the car. There were several people go down into this valley area , with some of them getting as close as 50 yards to them.
when a few of the babies stood up, some of them started walking closer, all of a sudden a big SOB stood up and stared in thier direction. he took a step or 2 in their direction and they all came running back
i was just shakuing my head wondrering if i was going to see something like the article described
