Has anyone been to the BREC Zoo in Zachary recently? I know they were/are doing repairs. Last time I went was pre-covid, and it was very underwhelming. Do they have all the exhibits open? Would small kids enjoy the experience? Thanks in advance!

It's larger with new exhibits so there's way more for you to be disappointed in now.

When I went a month or two back, they were giving out free “come back later this year” tickets at the gate because so much of the zoo was closed for construction. I’d wait a little longer.

A medium-sized city with the problems Baton Rouge has should never have a zoo. It's a complete waste of money and few people go to it.

The idea that even small towns like Monroe have a zoo is ridiculous.

A zoo is a huge expense to do correctly and really only big cities should have one.

You’d prolly be better off going to Global Wildlife in Robert.

I think it can make sense if you keep it specialized and put it in an easily accessible area. Moving it to city park near the lakes would have been a game changer. Keeping it up near Baker means it will never be what it could be, because it can never be good enough to justify the trip for most people.

It’s not in Zachary. It’s in Baker. And until they get anywhere close to finishing the renovations that they’ve been working on for like five years, it’s not really worth going.

Went to the Audubon zoo last weekend and it was very nice. I would suggest going there instead

Phase 1 of 2 was just completed. If you are looking for an amazing zoo experience, it is not there yet. What they are actually doing will be nice. The shame of the zoo is that Baton Rouge politics prevented it from being moved to the Farigrounds on Airline. This would have brought in traffic from Ascension and boosted revenue.

The zoo is close enough to the fairgrounds right now.

To the OP, the kids will enjoy it. It's a zoo. I don't mind it. It's a good time people watching.

It’s not bad, some of the new exhibits are open but it will still be under renovations for another few years. I think the giraffe exhibit is opening soon though which looks nice.

We were gifted a yearly zoo pass so we go pretty often to kill a few hours and energy with the 2 year old.

If you are looking for an all day activity go to the Audubon zoo, it’s a lot better with much more to see

Went a few weeks ago. Still under construction but worth the trip. No giraffes or elephants. But they have the tigers, pygmy hippo, rhino, lots of birds, and otters as the feature animals. You also get a rain check ticket good for a year since there is still construction at the back of the park.

It's a cheap morning trip and well worth the $8 per head.

Yes, there are a few monkey exhibits too.

My recommendation is to go early and leave before it gets too hot. Animals should be more active in the morning too.
