car seats when traveling by plane

We have a trip with two kids in carseats coming up. I was planning to just take them out and check them with the airline and then install in our rental when we arrive at our destination.
My wife seems to think this is a bad plan because we'll have to lug them to the airport from parking, uninstall, and that they might get damaged.
I still think that's a better plan than spending a couple hundred to rent them from a car rental place.
She has also proposed by some lightweight cosco not costco (as what I thought she said) portable carseats.
We've never taken the kids on a plane before so this is new territory. What do most of you all do?

I'd purchase the cheap, lightweight, cosco seats and use them for when you travel.
From what I've seen the seats you get from the car rental companies are the cheap cosco's and sometimes you'll show up and they don't have them.
Once they get to booster seat age, you can get a couple of no back boosters and it becomes much easier.

We've checked car seats before with no issues. Get a car seat bag so you don't lose any of the foam pieces.

Get folding car seat dollies from Amazon. Look for the ones that have big rollerblade type wheels. Easily haul the kids through the airport in their seats. Gate check the seats and they’ll be ready for you to use as soon as you deplane.

If I recall correctly, we brought the car seats onto the plane, and strapped them to the airplane seats. The kids sat in the car seats. Used the car seats in the rental car when we got there.
We bought some huge backpacks that the car seats fit into and wore the backpacks into the airport.

My daughter in law has a car seat bag as well. But another option are the many rental companies that aren't associated with car rental places. Google renting baby items for travel. There are many companies with great reviews.

Last week we flew with a car seat bag and car seat because we didn't get a rental car. Parents drove us around so we needed to bring one this time. Ordered a $30 Amazon car seat bag and used it as a checked bag. Wasn't bad at all. It's just annoying to carry around for that short period of time.
We rented fall of 2023 and got the $10/day car seat from National. It was very convenient, clean, and worth the $10/day. 100% would do that over bringing my own car seat if I had the option to do so. We only had a two day stay when we did that, so it was only $20.
If over 2 years old I'm sure you already got tickets for them and they'll have their own seats. Give them something to entertain themselves. If you had an iPad, have games loaded up or even a movie. If the plane you are on comes with Wifi or TV/Movies, let them do that. Our child is under 2 and is a handful but the iPad helps to put on kids shows.
I have never looked into these portable car seats but don't look terribly safe in the event of a major accident. I'd feel better getting the rental car seat or bringing my own. The rental car seats from car rentals are full size but don't have those crazy extra features that some expensive ones carry.

I went from infant car seat that snapped into a frame stroller to the Cosco rear facing to WayB to booster.
Currently my oldest is using the booster and younger one using the WayB. They probably weigh 15lbs total.
I check them and install on other side.
I see parents lugging the full car seat around the airport. Looks awful, but probably safest so I get it.

We had a friend who had one of these and borrowed that when we went to France in 2019. It was light and pretty easy to use and pack away on the plane.
There are also inflatable booster seats for anyone that may need one of those. Very easy to inflate/deflate for easy packing.

Buy the cheap Cosco carseats. Leave your regular car seats installed in the car. And then just check the cheap carseats at check-in. It's free.
When you get home just keep the cosco carseats as spares.

Check out the RideSafer Travel Vests. They’re not cheap, but worth it if you plan to travel a decent bit.

Inflatable booster seat is the way to go. You can even throw that bitch in an Uber to go to a restaurant.
To the OP, get car seat bags with backpack straps on it. Reminder, car seats don't count against your checked bag allowance.

When my son was two we bought a cheap lightweight seat from Amazon with a rolling cart attachment that folded up. Kind of looked like a tiny dolly.
Pushed him all through airport then sat him in the car seat on the plane then rolled him out and put it in the rental car.
Now that he’s 5 we’re taking him to SanDiego next month and just getting a car seat from Budget.

Uh, they're designed to protect your kids in a wreck of multi-thousand pound vehicles. Some dummy slinging it four feet onto a conveyor won't damage it.
Depending on where you're going, toddlers may not be restrained as a matter of course in any way. 18mo old standing on the backseat on a road where you swerve around horses in Central America? Box checked. Ex MIL told me to stop being a p**sy and not worry.
Get a cheap car seat, stick it in a giant drawstring bag, and don't worry about it. Optimal is if you have a stroller that the car seat plugs into. I'd prefer an on body carrier over dealing with a seat for transport on the ground, by far. Even with my daughter's tendency to heel me in the nuts, for a year.

Cosco carseats are cheap and great for travel. We check them when renting a car at destination.
Only issue is lugging them around airport but it's really not terrible especially if you have decent car seat bags to wear like a backpack and you're bringing a decent stroller.

Have flown with car seat checked with zero issue.
If it’s a quality car seat, there shouldn’t be any problem.
ETA: if you don’t have one, buy a travel bag for them though.

We bought 2 car seat bags from Amazon. They are drawstring bags that are bright red for car seats. That helps with some of the scuffing and abuse on the checked luggage.
The best thing I ever bought for kid travel was "Rolling Luggage Car Seat Straps" you can find them on amazon as well. It is a strap with 3 D rings that attach to the car seat connections quickly. Before the boys were walking, they rode in the seats happily on wheels. After they were walking more, it at least freed up hands and allowed us to get through security easy.

We have always traveled by checking our car seats. They arent going to break.
To do so, you absolutely need to get a car seat bag with wheels and shoulder straps. It is a pain, but rental car companies can’t guaranty car seats so we’ve just brought ours. A few tips:
1. Curbside check whenever possible.
2. When we drive to airport we pack up the car seats from one car into the car we are driving to airport. That way we aren’t installing/uninstalling at our home airport.
3. The car seats check for free. You can stuff any additional bulking items into the seat of the car seat when using a car seat back. This is especially helpful when traveling to a cold weather spot and you have some heavy duty shoes or a big coats you want to check.
4. Getting on and off airport shuttles is such a pain with the car seats and luggage and stroller and kids. If there is an option to walk to the rental car counter from the terminal and avoid shuttles - take it.
