Do you drink to celebrate or drink to forget?

I was discussing it with someone the other day. I don't think I have ever drank sad. Then the update guy with the baby said the same thing. He realized he only drinks to celebrate (and tgif counts!) Most alcoholics I know said they drink to forget/cope. In the darkest hours of my life I was too sad to drink. I never realized this at all until recently. What is your experience?

Neither really. I drink when I feel like having a drink.

I drank to deal with guilt.

It was very effective for a while.

I drank to process everyday life, which became a huge problem because I could never have just one or two beers.
Five years sober now, thankfully. Bill W is my homie.

I was celebrating something, but I forgot what it was.

I generally only drink to pair with food. Other than that, maybe one cocktail or beer. I never get drunk. Haven't for over 40 years. I truly love my life. I see it as a banquet, with so many great choices that I can’t have them all because there is just not enough time.

If I weren’t an alcoholic I’d drink all the time!

I drink for a host of reasons, but never because I’m sad, etc. That’s a hard and fast rule that I live by, as there be dragons.

Along similar lines, do you think that alcohol reveals “the real you” ? Or do you think it turns people into someone else ? Im in the camp that thinks it changes people, ive known many who turn into totally different people when they drink, almost opposite to who they are when they are sober (ie their real selves .)

I've never really drank to deal with anything, forget, grieve, etc.

I'll crack a beer after a tough week/day to decompress, but if I'm truly upset or sad I'm probably not drinking at all TBH.

I drink mostly so other people don’t think I’m a pussy. I’d rather have a Coke Zero.

I think it removes everything but our basest form. People who argue that it “reveals” who you are are wrong, in my opinion, because to say that people are nothing more than their basest form, that the decisions they make in spite of their base impulses don’t matter, is the most judgmental, narcissistic tripe I can imagine.

Now, if you continually return to alcohol knowing that your base self isn’t who you want to be, well, that’s a separate issue entirely. Those people are looking for excuses.

Often because I like the way it tastes. Mostly to celebrate.
Rarely because of stress or negativity.
