Driver’s License reinstatement needed.

** PAID **
frick ‘em.
Car totaled January 2023. Not my fault.
Bought new car a week later. Added to insurance.
Forced to switch insurance agents due to homeowner’s insurance company going under.
Dropped totaled car from insurance because duh…I want to save money (thanks for the warning insurance agent).
Finally sold totaled car in July after near 6 months of waiting on the settlement.
How the hell was I supposed to know I needed to have turned in the license plate? The bitch was sitting in the back yard totaled and I had still not collected the settlement for it. Meanwhile, I’m driving an insured car every day.
OMV said they mailed letters. Never got them. They went to my old address that was on my license. “You have ten days to inform us that you moved.” What a fun fact.
If my license had not expired in December I’d still never know that I did anything “wrong”.
I’ll be frick if I pay $656 for dropping insurance on a totaled car that I was still trying to receive payment for.
“But it’s in the back of your registration..” Oh, really?! I’ll make sure to read that as a bed time story from now on.
The fact that they think this oversight is a $700 mistake when I never drove an uninsured car makes my fricking blood boil.
Why don’t we worry about actual criminals instead doing this shite to people who are just trying to go to work and raise a family?

Pay the 700, move on.

Take them to court and make them prove the uninsured vehicle was actually driven.
It'll probably cost you more than $700, but it is more of a principle thing.

Sounds like you didn't handle your business.

Call your state rep and bring documentation of the timeline you just laid out.

You can try to fight it. When all is said and done, you’ll probably pay the $700 anyway (or more).
Probably best to bite the bullet and move on.

I moved states once, nobody taught me the plate rule either…. I just kept Louisiana plates until they put a ticket on my car in DC. Same excuse…mailed to my old address a thousand miles away. Moved back 7 years later, same fine. Had proof from insurance company of continuous coverage, they didn’t care. I threw a fit, said I could contest in Baton Rouge… they don’t care. Moral of the story is you’re going to have to pay

Louisiana OMV is one small step above a kindergarten class. They have got to be the lowest form of government employees in the country, and given Louisiana’s ranking in every category imaginable, I can say that without any sarcasm at all.

Just chalk it up and pay it. When you get stopped and ticketed for driving with a suspended license it is going to be much worse.

Get your shite together. License with wrong address, notices mailed there. A 5 month expired license is how you found out.
If you have the plate, you have to have insurance. Good luck getting out of that

The black hole of the DMV is nearly impossible to navigate. Much of the time it’s just easier to buy your way out.

The thread is made so many times I’m convinced this is how Baton Rouge makes the majority of its money.
They purposely set it up this way to make money, they care more about the fine than any kind of common sense or whatever “safety” it’s supposed to stop. Especially since if you’re an illegal alien you can drive around with no license registration insurance or inspection and be sent on your way when pulled over.

I get that people don't realize you have to cancel your license plate / registration before you drop the insurance on a vehicle, but updating something as important as your drivers license address seems like it should be common sense.

everyone else’s fault but yours, huh? guess who’s paying the fee for learning this lesson?

This actually worked for me when the LA department of revenue tried to extort me. Maybe try the same move with the extortionists at the DMV?

They're robots that are going to follow the rules to the letter and have no room or concern for creative thought. Certainly it's clear to you that a totaled car doesn't need insurance, but that's not what their rulebook says so that's what they stick to.
You could try a public tag agent with a report of the vehicle being totaled and they may have a way to override. I had insurance lapse for a day on an insurance switch which triggered a $500 fine as I didn't send them the new version and when I was able to provide documents on it they waived that same fee and got me an updated license. They charge a tiny bit for their service but very reasonable.

Have you heard of other DMVs having as draconian of rules and a fine of $700 for not turning in a plate on time (even if you can prove you had insurance)
$700 fine is beyond excessive for this type of “infraction” no matter how disorganized someone is in life
