College Sports desperately need a salary cap

This is looking more and more like the NFL before the salary cap was implemented when teams like the 49ers could buy up all the best players. If nothing is done soon, we’re about to have a pretty shite product when the same one or two teams have all the players and win everything every year.
I do not like the path amateur sports are taking in today’s age.

Good luck collectively bargaining with the bowl subdivision schools as a whole.

What amount is the cap? What are the “salaries”?
We have a general idea of what some players are getting, but the public really doesn’t know the specific amounts of the vast majority. At least professional contracts are made public. Most colleges are public institutions, and the salaries of all employees can be found.
The first step is to pull the curtain back on all the back room money changing hands.

more like the Yankees and Dodgers and how MLB is run
highest paid team doesn't always win
NCAA and conferences need to get on the other side of these lawsuits and hopefully get Congress to rein in all these state laws that don't agree before restricting anything and inviting more lawsuits
there has to be equity and I think eventually you will see that with the SEC and Big Ten who will lead the way and if you don't want to play by those rules then go figure out another way to springboard your athletic career
these athletes in major sports have to realize that they stand to benefit a lot more with a healthy college sports landscape or it just might break the whole system
at some point some teams/universities donors will not continue to shell out to these collectives if they are not seeing any return in championships

Yea explain to me how that will be enforced. There are still the ALABAMAs
of the world who will cheat behind the scenes.

I remember (and was a part of) when they did have a cap. It was $0 (officially anyway)......But everyone swore it would be better if they got paid.
That bed is starting to stink now, eh?

From the school to the player, sure, but otherwise I'm unclear how you could cap NIL agreements between companies and players.

There has never been a level playing field when it comes to player compensation. It goes back almost to the beginnings of college sports.
When the Carnegie Report on the matter was released in 1929 it seemed like the dam would burst but the charade was kept up for another 90 years.
Edit: I just realized that paper is from Black Thursday, the biggest stock market sell-off in history and the beginning of the Great Depression.

lol
what amateur college athletics needs is to rewind 5 years and get rid of NIL/portal completely.

Amateurism in general and college athletics in particular are ludicrous concepts that deserve to die

Just use the complete NFL model, draft and everything
Posted on 5/28/24 at 12:32 pm to cbree88
Would be impossible to enforce this

How is that different than what we have been seeing since the playoffs started?

Salary Cap started in 1994. In the 15 years before the salary cap there were 14 different teams (50% of the league) that went to the SB, and 7 different teams (25%) won it.
Also, what you are talking about would actually be limiting the endorsement deals that professional players are able to receive. This is over and above what the caps control.

The great thing about college sports is, you have many instances where a kid blooms late or blooms too early. Going down the road we are, I think more kids especially in the African american communities will miss the opportunity to go to college.
It’s let me get mine attitude that will screw over thousands of athletes who may not be the 5 star football recruit and will miss the chance to compete in college and get a degree.

Nice false narrative.
Even the people that said they deserved to be paid didn't think it would make competitive balance more "fair"
