Charleston is awesome - I live within 2 hours and the kids and I go several times a year. When I was married, the ex and I stayed at 21 East Battery - great B&B that's central. That way you can walk to the old market, rainbow row, the OMG house, etc. Across the river is the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey, which is an excellent tour - and before anyone says anything about being pregnant and moving around, my ex was 8 months preggo when we climbed the Boston monument

If you like BBQ, Bessinger's is about the best around. What type of food?

The best way to visit Charleston is to not. Won't be a popular opinion but about halfway through day 2 y'all are gonna start thinking "what else is there to see". Its a good, not great, 3 day weekend for folks in their mid 50s and later. Once every 10 years or so. We lived in Charleston for 3 years in our early 30s and it isn't a bad place to live but other than a pretty small area that is WAY crowded its pretty pedestrian. Its far more crowded now than it was then. I haven't spent anytime in Charleston in a couple of years other than driving over t0 meet friends in the area and staying at most a night but it hasn't improved from what I have seen. It isn't a terrible place to live, its about what one would expect for a cruise ship stop as far as tourism goes...about 6 hours of milling around in a crowd and you have pretty much seen and experienced it. Food away from the tourist area is good, not great, and it is subpar in the tourist area. They cater to the same crowd that find PCB and Gatlinburg exotic.

The really bad down side are the people....the locals and tourists. The area is VERY popular with retirees from the NE who did not have enough money to make it all the way to Florida....they are almost unbearable. The people who are native to the area all pretend to be old money or they are mired in generational poverty....these 3 groups can't stand one another, no one likes the tourists and they all hate the retirees and the retirees are, of course, trying to turn it into Philadelphia.

A lot of people LOVE Charleston...most of them probably also like PCB and Gatlinburg. There are a LOT of similarities between the 3.....

Yes, the plan is to spend half a day in Charleston on Wednesday, then Thursday and Friday and drive to Columbia Friday evening.

It really is to those of us that know. I am not saying there aren't some great places, I named a few and there are definitely others. But your average places including most of Shem Creek are exactly that...average. Let me put this in a way you might understand...some places are like USCe Women's Basketball, but most are like USCe Men's Football. They can field a team, but not winning many trophies.

My wife and I used to go down every year for the weekend. Depending on their calendar and your dinner res check these guys out if you’re into this type of thing.

Also a good break from the walking and right near market.

34 West

We went to a show there once and had a great time. Depends on your taste though.

I've about had enough of living here. It's simply too overcrowded, too expensive, too self-important, and only getting worse.

It has been sad to watch Charleston lose its charm and be overrun by out-of-staters who act as if they were chosen to live here. This has been happening for many years but only recently does it seem like its completely gone.

It's still different enough from most of America that it makes for a nice weekend visit with good scenery and cuisine options, but I'm personally looking forward to leaving the area.

The seafood here is absolutely on par with just about anywhere, NOLA included.

Then either CHS has really upped its game or MSY has really declined.

Usec to travel regularly to CHS into 2016. After a while I just accepted that it's a very overrated food town. The closest thing to 'wow' was the corn bread at Edmund's Oast.

Charleston is comparable to New Orleans and Savannah and St Augustine perhaps. Putting it in the same category of Gatlinburg or PCB is completely ignorant.

There's definitely truth about yankee invasion though.

This is good information. I requested access to the Cock board twice over the last month. Still no acceptance or reply.

I’d wait till Saturday morning to drive to Columbia. No reason the be there Friday night. Make plans to stay in Columbia and Charleston Saturday night so if it ends up being a day game you can have the pregnant lady drive you back to Charleston after the game.

It’s nice I’ve been and would def go back. We stayed at the Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District and did lunches and dinners along King Street. Very NOLA ‘esk but people were great.

Nobody posts there. Post game day questions and logistics regarding Columbia to the SEC Rant, you'll get the info you need from many home and visiting fans alike.

Well first we were worried about an 11 am kick and traffic getting in. 2nd she was worried about a 7-8pm kick and driving two hours back (sans traffic) pregnant after a long day

That’s why you book a hotel in both towns and cancel the one your won’t use after kickoff time is announced. There ain’t no 11am kickoff on the east coast and there’s plenty of time to get there by noon.

I was pointing out that the same people who find Gatlinburg and PCB "attractive" are likely to also find Charleston "attractive". The real comparison is Savannah of course. Neither is, in my opinion only, much of a tourist attraction, at least not for more than a day every 10 years or so. Neither is, in my opinion, comparable to New Orleans except in terms of architecture and age....New Orleans has infinitely more going on than either, again in my experience. Live music alone sets New Orleans apart as unique.

St. Augustine is an interesting comparison. The general area is great...some really good fishing (the same is true of Charleston) but the tourist area of St. Augustine is, to me, more interesting than either Charleston or Savannah. It also doesn't seem to be as crowded, but that could just be me or timing.

Beaufort used to be a pretty neat place on the Carolina coast and it is still but it is getting very crowded. Another 10 years and it will be another Charleston. South Carolina is in the middle of a hell of a growth spurt...the entire state is getting hit by it, and over all I guess it is a good thing but it is also making some of the best small and medium sized towns in the nation less attractive...Aiken, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson....the list is pretty long....all really nice places to live and even visit for a few days that are in the throes of big population growth that is fast eroding the attraction. Again, it is overall a good thing but it does not come without a cost. Charleston paid that cost many years ago and the impacts are ongoing.

Thats as well put as I ever heard it. We were among the out of staters when we lived in Charleston but we moved to Charleston from Athens, Georgia so at least we were kind of natives, at least sort of similar to up country South Carolinians LOL....its the people from up north who are turning the Carolina coast into south Florida without the benefits that makes Charleston less appealing, at least to me. I love South Florida....I'd live in Miami in a heart beat BUT I would not live in Miami because its charming...it is not...it is just the opposite. I get it, if I had lived my life in NYC and was retirement age I would leave also...I love NY, wouldn't want to live there in retirement....but as is the case when people leave an area they want to bring the area with them....and they have accomplished that to a large extent in Charleston and the surrounding areas. If I am going to interact with a bunch of New Yorkers I am going to New York 'cause there is at least more than a days worth of shite to do.....
