it's a bit different over a 20+ year career where the best (like Rahm, and he'll return to form eventually) earn generationally money both on and off the course and the majors are elevated more than ever, and Watt is a bit too thick to see three and four steps ahead.

Or Rahm was like "yea I'll take a hit to my image and rankings for a bit for half a billion dollars." John Rahm might not like playing on LIV as much as some of the other guys, but he 100% is not regretting his movie/if you gave him the chance to do it again he'd make a different choice.

Rahm was not going to earn anything even remotely close to that amount of money on Tour. The guy had 11 Tour wins and 2 majors and became the highest paid athlete in the entire world in 2023. The youngest athlete ever to earn over 500 million in their career. All because he was briefly the best golfer in the world. He would have been an absolute moron to not take that money.

Dude was always going to make hundreds of millions in his career. What’s the extra $500M get him? You think he went and bought a bigger yacht or now flies a bigger private plane? At some point you reach diminishing returns and your life is essentially the same if you have $200M or $700M in the bank.

I think he truly regrets his decision. You can just see it in his face.

Rahm basically said all this before he eventually signed with LIV

I truly think Rahm was headed to Tiger/ Rory/Phil wealth on the Tour. He was going to be at a 100million plus net worth before 40.

This is the narrative going right now, but MAYBE it’s simply a competitive guy who’s upset that he’s not playing well in the big tournaments.

You just mentioned he didn’t need the extra 100s of millions. So why did he choose to go? Maybe he does like the idea of playing team golf on a global tour. Maybe he does want to play big events in Spain.

I think it’s obvious he thought he could make the move & then eventually play PGA Tour events once the merger is done.

Im just not buying the whole “he looks miserable”, “he looks like he regrets his decision” schtick.

Wyndham Clark is probably not enjoying his time playing in the majors either this year.

Can this be said about any other LIV golfer?

Media loves to make Phil the bad guy, but people still love him

Not even close.
He was the scapegoat of getting involved with those “scary mother f***ers”.

He might’ve always been liked up until 2020-2021. Then he became the villain. Since then, I think his image has improved, but maybe not to what it used to be

He reportedly got a $500M payout, that includes equity in his LIV Golf team.

He’s already earned $50M+ in career earnings on PGA Tour.

Not counting sponsorship deals (Nike, Callaway, Taylormade), Tiger has made
$120M in winnings. “+100M in equity”
Phil made ~$96M
Rory made $87M “+50M in equity”

You’re not acting like Rahm could have made >500M playing on PGA are you?

Yea they hated the LIV stuff but they always liked him.

His image has not improved since joining LIV. As you said, LIV made him the villain.

rory has roughly a 150 million dollar net worth and he is 34 years old

So, once again I think Rahm would have amassed a 100 million dollar net worth before 40 if he stayed on the tour

Earnings are but a piece of net worth for guys like that

I think it has definitely helped Bryson image. It’s simple also he is kinda of what is missing from the tour. Fans like having a little conflict out there. He is missed by the regular guy who likes seeing people get a little intense.

500 million in 2023 dollars versus 100 million in 2034 dollars having to grind a lot harder.

I also think that his foot issues have been undersold as a possible reason he wants the money now. Here's a good Golf Digest article on the topic.

Why do people like Phil? Because his is a total buffoon. Because he plays stupid shots and recovers spectacularly some of the time. Because he runs his mouth on occasion. Because he hits into the same hospitality tent 2 days in a row and hits out of that tent on both days rather than take a drop. Because he apparently almost gambled away his whole fortune and even recovered from that.

People love him for the 6 US Opens he lost, most by literally throwing it away. They rarely mention the 3 green jackets, 2 PGAs (1 after the age of 50), and the Open at Murfield.

People love him for his off the course stuff and the fact that his bad golf is the most entertaining bad golf in the world. His great golf is just a footnote.

Dude what? 45 tour wins, 7 majors and being the oldest major champion at 50 years old is not a foot note. He deserves almost as much credit for that win as Tiger. Doesn't get it of course but he arguably beat a much better field while all the current stars were basically in or entering their prime. Tiger beat a 5-6 Italian that hits the ball 260 yards when he was like 8 years younger than Phil.

All the other stuff is just a bonus to him being awesome.

This.

And hanging out with Paige helped too.
