Is Louisiana the worst state for golf?

Currently finishing a week long trip driving back from SC and stopped in Hoover at Ross Bridge for golf and spa. It is a fantastic place and the course is spectacular. (Although still needs a year or so to grow back in after the redo)
Was talking to the guys I was paired with about the BR golf scene and realized just how crappy we have it. Two Country Clubs, UClub, three semi-private and two public (not counting Webb, city, Clark)
And I get that the geography here is different than in BR but why can’t there be more appealing options. A resort type 36 hole option along I-10 seems like would get some interest.
Back to the question…..is Louisiana the worst state for golf?

Well Birmingham is probably the best golf experience in the country when you factor in the area not being that populated and not very wealthy. But, to your point, LA is the worst that comes to mind, other than maybe North Dakota.

Here in central Louisiana, we have a plethora of courses about an hour away. Alec has two that are side by side. One in Marksville and another in Kinder. Sam Rayburn and Cypress Bend. Several in L.C. We have two here, a muni and Ft. Big Johnson along with Beauregard CC in DeRidder. NSU has a fun little course. And you can get on most with no problem, without a tee time and not too expensive either. For the most part all are usually in good shape, a few goat ranches, but still fun to play. It's a shame Hodges Gardens (Emerald Hills) shut down.

In a short answer yes it’s the worst I’ve ever been to. Baton Rouge is a terrible golf area

We’re very spoiled in Alabama, especially bham. Tons of good public courses, RTJ trail, 6-7 great private tracks and basically every town above 3-4K people has a playable golf course or two in it north of Bham.

Depends on if you’re talking public or private options.
Example: public golf in Houston sucks pretty bad. Lots of options, but all glorified goat ranches, crowded, and over priced. The nice public courses are way too expensive to justify not just joining a private course if you play a lot.
With that said, there are a lot of really nice private clubs in and around Houston.
Austin is very similar. Maybe the public golf scene is just dying. Who knows. Just feel it wasn’t like this at either location 10-15 years ago.

Cenla is awesome for golf. And green fees are insanely low for the quality you get.

Disagree somewhat on Houston. Memorial and Gus are always packed but never have a problem with Cypresswood, Augusta and Highland Pines. Also - The Wilderness in Lake Jackson is a lot of fun.

Depends on if you have money or not and don’t mind a little drive. I’ll take Squire Creek and Bayou Desiard CC all day and not be ashamed and might as well throw Mystic Creek in there even though it is in Arkansas and then you have Black Bear.

Avery Ranch and Falconhead are both over $120 green fee on the weekends and offer lovely 6 hour rounds. Both courses not even 6 years ago were $50-$60 a round and you could finish in 4.5 hours.

Austin is the worst major public golf scene in the country and it’s not even close. No other top 25 city has this few of options. And clay / kizer are now closed for the summer

You should try going to Atlanta.
Truly terrible public golf. Austin’s normally not bad, but right now it’s in as bad of shape as ever with 3 of the main public courses in disastrous shape.

Good to read that Cenla has maintained some good courses. Reading the horror stories about courses in the rest of the state makes me glad for the options we have around us here in Branson.
Holiday Hills = $
Thousand Hills = $$
Pointe Royale = $$
Branson Hills = $$$
Ledgestone = $$$
Mountain Top (Par 3) = $$$
Top of the Rock (Par 3) = $$$
Buffalo Run = $$$$
Ozark National = $$$$
Payne's Valley = $$$$$

What do you guys think of Dallas public golf? I've started to become really sick of it, but if it hasn't been mentioned yet, maybe I'm being too critical.
I play Tenison Highlands, Waterchase, Firewheel, Cedar Crest, Golf Club of Dallas mainly and my gripe isn't with the courses, but how ridiculously hard it is to get a tee time.

Louisiana is up there with the worst for quality. I would assume it's harder to maintain quality golf courses on muck and clay soils in a river delta.
Outside of the Dakotas, wyoming or Alaska, I'd have a hard time thinking of a state that doesn't have courses better than Squire or CCL. The depth in LA is also shite.
