Today I had three that used their own rods/reels. Two used shite that should’ve been donated to the smithsoium and third a Kmart special.
Knives were a plenty cutting line right off the bat.
Leave your junk at home!!!!!

Do you not tell them at booking?
Every charter I've ever been on has better gear than me, by orders of magnitude. I would never think of bringing my own gear, that's part of what you are paying for, is to frick somebody else's shite up.

I bring all my own gear.
Personally I just want the guide to do their best to put me on fish and offer advice on color/cadence

Did they pay you to take them fishing? Let them fish. It’s an expensive lesson that they will learn.

Yup, never leave home without the Zebco 202 and the Johnson spincast.

They tell them we have rentals, the ones who insist in using their shite have crap gear. Mono that was bought in the Nixon administration, buggy whip rods and Fukn corks with black leaders.

Just exactly where do you run a boat, the bride and I were talking about a fishing trip last week.

Two piece with a reel that had sand in it.

Do you think maybe they thought it was extra to use your gear? I wouldn’t doubt that. First time for them? If their gear was that bad, they were likely inexperienced.
I’ve brought my own gear on party boats, but that’s a little different.

Actually, on the occasion that I go on an inshore charter, I usually do bring a couple of rods. I pretty much always ask if if it’s OK, and my gear is in good shape and is quality stuff. I mainly do it because most boats only have spinning gear on board and for many applications I prefer baitcasting.
From a guide perspective, is that not cool? I never really thought about it.

I’ve never had to “rent” a rod while charter fishing. In that scenario I’d definitely be bringing my own gear

I usually do but most of the time I’m more outfitted than the guide (not necessarily proud of that lol). I fished with one guide in Venice who insisted I didn’t bring my own gear. I convinced him to let me bring a rod so I can fish some swim baits on jigs. All he had was popping corks.
We ended up fishing for some redfish against some rocks and, as someone who is not a fan of redfish, I started casting my jig off the back of the boat in some deeper water. We proceeded to start catching specks almost every cast off the back of the boat. We came back with 44 specks and all but maybe 4 came from a jig. Thankful I brought it that day.
I’ve also fished with a guide in Jacksonville who had top of the line g loomis rods and custom hard baits. His gear clearly out fished mine. So, I guess it depends.

Always bring my own, but it isn’t junk.

Not on an inshore but I will the next time go with Southern Pride. My son set up a few from Cgrand and I have a couple.

Every single time... I fish with you

Who is "they"? Rental what?

Depends on what type of fishing.
If conventional, just use the guides.
If fly fishing I only use mine. My fly fishing stuff is absolutely better than theirs.

Really? That hasn't been my experience. Some have custom rods and nice reels but most have average at best rods and reels.
Personally I want to use the guides stuff, let the guide clean the fish, etc. etc. Sure I love doing all the jazz and I do that when I am on my boat or a buddies boat, but on a charter let the guide do their job.
