Stihl MS250. The Glock 19 of chainsaws.
This plus SeaFoam. Mine can sit for 6 months, stale gas, whatever. Cranks right up, just like the Stihl blower that also gets used sporadically. Adjustments are easy, good brake, good power for a homeowner saw.
Just like a Glock, I don't know if it's the "best" and it's probably not the only reliable brand, but it's a safe purchase that works.
ETA The 180 is also a good buy if he doesn't need the extra oomph.

Yep and they’re so common that parts and troubleshooting experience is everywhere.

I based my purchase on all the landscape trailers. You see a trailer with a zero turn and 2-strokes all racked up on the sides, they're Stihl 90% of the time.

Depending on your usage, the 261 is lighter and has a larger power to weight ratio. Built better with more quality material.
This. I have a MS261 and I love it. I have a 20" bar on it and honestly I need to drop down to an 18". The 20" eats pine pretty well but it'll slug a bit in anything harder when it's fully buried.
Absolute beast of a saw though and bats well above its class. I was between the ms250 and 261 and very happy I chose the 261.

Echo CS590 is what I have. It can sit for years and start right up. I just keep a bottle of something like truffle and I changed the chain to something more aggressive. It's a beast.

That’s what I have, too. It’s a hot rod.

Another vote for ECHO. Great machine. Always starts right up. But you will need to upgrade the chain. To be honest, I just buy chains in bulk on amazon. To frustrating to work with a dull chain. My time is limited to weekends and when I have time to work, I want to be cutting not sharpening.

Stihl is my go-to for such work.

My yard tools are all the Greenworks 60V system. Beyond pleased. The 21" cut mower is my most favorite tool in my garage.
If anyone is interested in Greenworks their Memorial Weekend sale is always incredible.

I’ve been pleased with my husqvarna 455 (19 years old now). It’s probably bigger than what you need for normal use, but it’s the only saw I own and I’m glad I have the 20” bar when trees fall on my place.
Chainsaw are pretty easy to work on from what I’ve found. In the 20 yrs I’ve owned it I’ve only had to replace the primer bulb and I just replaced the clutch a couple of weeks ago.

Any Stihl will be the highest quality and most value, and least red assing. And use the premixed fuel. It’s way more expensive than gas and oil but you can start it right up after 1-2 years of non use. I mean don’t even think about another brand, it’s that much of a slam dunk and I’ve had them all.

Pay a little more and get a Stihl, it’s worth the price. I worked with tree cutting companies that are contracted with power companies for about 6 years, nothing beats a Stihl. I have one in the porch closet that hasn’t been started in over a year and I’d bet it would start within a minute’s time. I did use a Echo after Hurricane Ida that I was impressed with but that was my only experience using one.
