From Doug Thompson
Kling avg only .217 but his ob avg is over .400 (which is higher than Tanks)
LSU is 18-1 when he’s leading off and 26-10 when he’s in lineup It’s like 6-10
when he’s on bench Point Thompson making is he’s a on base freak who’s great defensively ( example catching that rocket Sat vs AM
Also said when Alex in lineup our pitchers ERA is points lower than when he’s not.
His point is while neither gonna tear it up hitting their defense on 2 of the most important positions is high caliber
Don’t believe look it up or see if u can transcript of this afternoons show

Kling is still a shitty hitter no matter how much makeup you try to put on that turd

That one is tough to analyze without more data. If you catch in the mid-week and not on the weekends which happened some early in the season that's going to skew. Later in the season if you catch mid-week, then Jump and Holman and someone else takes TBA, that's going to skew. I'd like to see more detail on that specifically. All that said, the ole eye test shows he's done a much better job catching the ball than our other guys have and he's been credible with the bat. He's a very good example of development under our coaches.

I think that qualifies him to have “it”.

Kling led off a good bit early in the season against non SEC teams when LSU was beating lesser teams and piled up stats. In SEC play he is hitting .170 with a .291 OBP. Both very low.
Kling is fine in midweek games but a bust on weekends.

Walks and HBP aren’t glamorous but they count as much as a single. I didn’t realize his OBP was that high. That plus his defense is pretty good justification for his lineup spot

.172 Batting average in Sec play with a .291 OBP does not justify starting much less leading off.

Totally unsurprising. Kling is suffering from confidence deficit and an aggressive approach at the plate. He has all the talent. It may not but it could click for him on a dime. That’s my opinion. It’s also true that when we don’t play him the outfield suffers defensively, no doubt about that.

Always grew up learning, “A walk’s a hit.” If he gets on base 40% of the time, it’s really not as bad as people think. I wonder what it would be if the kid hit around .250

I’m going to be honest, I don’t really care that much about any stats that aren’t from conference games

Was told this last week from someone within the program. Apparently they’ve gotten ahold of metrics they didn’t track before and this popped off the page for them. And, a look back at last season took place and it backed up the same findings.
But hey, a few will constantly bring up the Florida game and say Alex failed here and failed there….blah, blah, blah.
Overall, over the last two seasons, including a national championship, the production of the pitchers significantly improved when Alex is behind the plate.
And he’s been more than serviceable as a hitter. Hats off to him. He’s the type of player that teams need to win. Serves his role well while the superstars do their thing.

You mean, you don't care for any stats that don't support your narrative.

In two seasons Kling is officially tied with Milam in SEC plate appearances with 92. That’s why idiots like Rudy shouldn’t be listened to.
Here is just a couple examples of guys not named Larson, Crews, Morgan, or Duplantis.
Milazzo had 73 plate appearances his first season and hit a whooping .148 with 1 rbi and 24 strikeouts. He has since gone on to raise his SEC average to .239 in 2023 and .290 this year.
Braswell had 119 SEC plate appearances his freshman year and hit .215. He also had an OBP of .286. Braswell then went on to hit .253 and .311 the following years. He is now one of our top hitters in sec play.
So far if you look at Klings 92 plate appearances yes his average is low, but his OBP is right there with where Braswell and Milazzo were. And he is showing improvement.
Players are allowed to improve.
You can say he has sucked for 2 years but in reality he doesn’t even have a full season of SEC at bats.
Bury him in the 8 hole, stop forcing him into the leadoff spot, and let him develop.

I mean he’s right though.
We’re not struggling in out of conference play and our OOC SOS is terrible.
We’re struggling in the SEC and so is Kling.
