I know y'all are recruiting high school players at an elite level. Maybe someone should tell BK to put some of the high recruiting money into the portal pot. Just a thought.

But that’s only half the picture.

You HAVE to manage your roster effectively.

We just threw away an offense that was as good as 2019 because of poor roster management.

Defensively, we are legitimately bottom of the league at two different position groups.

But the Yankees have been buying players since they bought Babe Ruth.

Roster management is a different discussion. You can’t always fix a position group by throwing numbers at it, we saw with the DBs last year.

We need quality over quantity and I didn’t see a ton of quality these cycles.

Can’t wait until we find someone who will.

Because people see we need people but when we don’t over spend they panic and melt.

People are pissed because we were put in the position to have to overspend. BK has had 3 years to get the DL right and it has gotten worse each year. He was banking on Wingo or Smith returning and neither did. Then he publicly stated that we needed to get multiple DL transfers, and swung and missed. Point is, it’s his job as the head coach to manage the roster well enough so that we aren’t put in the position to have to overspend on players.

The DTs that have come on visits would automatically be the best players at that position when they step on campus had LSU shelled out the money.

CBK not doing everything possible to improve DT is embarrassing.

It’s not a sustainable model.

I still think marquee players with established track records of performing will command top dollar,

And they should but those guys won’t hit the portal very often. You’ll get the guys wanting to jump from the G5 to the big boys and you’ll get some stars from bad teams who are changing coaches but most elite players aren’t going to leave where they are to go to a new situation and take the risk of hurting their draft stock.

Should’ve been more active in the winter portal but we didn’t have the coaching staff in place yet.

We could have gotten Walter Nolen for less money than Williams was asking for.

Relying on the portal. You’ve seen the price tags portal players are asking for. You’ve got to get them out of high school, retain them and develop them. It’s a much cheaper and more sustainable path.

Don’t think there were many game changers then either. Maybe Nolen but he was only going to Ole Miss, he’s from that area.

Nolen was the only “game changer” that I can remember but you could’ve gotten some solid players at a decent price compared to what was being asked for in the spring.

What do you mean by relying on it? We’ve seen plenty of teams have success with transfers. Obviously you want to recruit and develop well, but you are always going to have to spend money in the portal. Hopefully you can recruit and develop well enough to keep that to a minimum.

Why would next year's elite HS players take less than supposedly average DT's got this cycle?

2025 class ain't even close to signed yet and the price to keep them will continue to go up.

Agree here. Gotta play the long game. And the rules keep changing every year.
