Why during and after a tragedy are there floods of people, agencies, groups, etc. needing a big, massive handout?

Do the huge amount of taxes I’ve been paying not go towards these rescue efforts by authorities? Do the individuals hurt by a natural disaster not have insurance? Does the death of a loved one set a family back to the point I have to financially help them? Do they not have life insurance?

Sorry, but if we’re not ‘all in this together’ when it’s time to minimize risks then why do we need to be ‘all in this together’ when contingencies happen?

I will still help people because of guilt and caring but I truly despise insurance companies of any kind and feel like they get off the hook and suck arse when they are needed the most. Also you can’t prevent everything, but people that take max risks in life and just expect everyone else to step up when things don’t go their way give me the red arse as well.

Rant over.

No, that goes to welfare, foreign wars and the cost of bringing unlimited numbers of illegal aliens into the country sunshine.

Louisiana is up near the top of states with emergencies requiring enormous amounts of federal aid.

I wouldn’t expect much agreement here.

Sounds like you’ve never had to go through it. I had hurricane put hole in our roof, blow down fence, etc. although not catastrophic loss, enough to really put some stress on you. Insurance still does not give you everything you need. If you make too much money, not getting crap from govt except maybe a tax extension. And if you don’t have savings then it can put you in a bind. I’m not one to hold my hand out but I can see how easily it could be devastating for some people…. I’m also not donating either though

I kind of know what you mean. Remember after the 2016 flood, how there was all this federal money and all these donations and programs? Does anyone here know where it went or anyone who was helped?

This. Americans have a huge problem with wants vs. needs. Social media has ramped this up x1000.

For example, the "housing crisis" is not really a thing, imo. People just want to start off where their parents are now. First-time home buyers "need" solid counters and hardwood floors.

Point being, we have "keeping up with the Joneses" on steroids coupled with a pitiful education in finances. Something our schools do very poorly.

…and I haven’t even received as much as a Christmas card thanking me.
