I guess the 80 bazillion new IRS employees need something to do.
These things are always sold as “making the rich pay their fair share”, but it’s always the middle and working classes that they go after.

We do well but not over 400k, barely 300 - standard deduction. Wife and I are straight W2 employees. Theres nothing to look at, I guess the 80 bazillion new IRS employees need something to do.

Mailed my check on April 11th and they cashed it on the 16th. Do you think their refunds are quicker than that?

Might be the Trump flag in my front yard.

I wrote those wasteful bastards a check for $7k this year. W2 employee … I’d rather have the letter

Just a complete waste of money be the service.
They aren't going to find it in the upper 1% taxes. That was a straight up lie. Attorneys and tax specialist have will push the limits of tax loopholes but not jeopardize their clients reputation or freedom... And even if that line is crossed, there's a long litigation priocess. The 150 to 600k is where the new IRS agents are going to live

Nowhere near your league. I've been filing extensions since the 2020 tax year. Had crap going on in real life and didn't feel like cutting into my TD shitposting time. Finally got it cleaned up a couple of months ago. Paid for some years, got a credit for others. Whatever. A month after everything was finished, we got multiple love letters from the IRS saying that we still owed basically the amount that was already paid ($11K or so). Hoping it's a computer glitch.
Weird thing was that once my CPA had our returns finished, the IRS and La Dept of Revenue both had their money deducted from my bank same-day. Refunds from both took a good 4 weeks.

Standard deduction at 300k? Really?
SALT cap, 2.5% interest rates, and not a lot of charity
Happens a lot with the higher standard deduction

They have been hired and are on the job. There was some official announcement in an article and they were bragging about getting a real person maybe if you call the IRS.
Some have been hired... customer "service" was abysmal, now it just sucks balls. And many of those 80,000 (which was over an 8-10 year period) were to replace agents who were retiring. They weren't all auditors and enforcement agents. But many were. And yes, their "only over $400,000" line was bull. They will quickly get down to people making $45 and $50,000.

By the way a 90 day letter is not an audit.
And yes the service is making massive mistakes right now.
Had a client I consulted with that missed two years of RMDs. We recommended they take them immediately then file a form 5329 for both years (2021 and 2022).
2021 accepted no issue.
2022 they got a letter saying to file an amended return.
My opinion is they pulled too many people to answer the phones and processing has been hurt

Actually, that's upper middle class nationally. Only reason I looked it up is because the Wife and I don't make much more than that

Well what does the letter say? If you are w2 there isn’t anything to audit

Have you ever tried to call social security? 48 minutes of music. Then a recording saying press uno to give your number for a call back. Then Tammy with 4 kids screaming taping her fingernails answers and acts like a goddess with a chip on her shoulder with the power she has from being SS.
It is all so convoluted they change every time you call and the person has different scripts and rules.
The IRS years ago was a separate nightmare. The person on the other end of the phone after hours of elevator music was making a box of rocks look like it had more intellect.
ETA: Don't even start me on the DMV.
