The Gonzales Police Department detectives have arrested a man accused of Malfeasance in Office and other charges at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23.
Justin B. Champlin, 45, Geismar, Louisiana is charged with 1 count of Malfeasance in Office, 2 counts of Computer Tampering, and 2 counts of Injuring Public Records, officials said.
Champlin began his employment with the Assessor’s office in 2012, police said.
According to investigators, on Wednesday, April 17, police received a report that an internal audit of the Ascension Parish Assessor indicated possible malfeasance by Champlin, while serving as the Deputy Assessor. Detectives said they began investigating inappropriate acts taken by Champlin while in office.
During the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Champlin tampered with the tax assessed values on his personal property, detectives said.

Hard to believe that someone would tamper with records and risk their job over 300 bucks. More likely someone tampered with records to get this guy fired. Sounds like someone wanted revenge for something.

Property tax on your personal residence is theft

I'd bet any money someone wanted him gone so they looked for a reason to get rid of him.
I would say that if some outside company went through every parish's assessor's office records they would find some type of manipulated tax records.
Start with the people who own the most land in each parish. If they donate a good bit to the assessors campaign there is a good chance they don't pay even half of what they are supposed to pay.

My next door neighbor has 4 bedrooms in their house, I have 3. He pays less in property tax each year than I do.
