re: New Biden Coal Rules ‘The End of Coal as a Power Source’

If coal plants are shut down are there enough alternate sources to power this country, enough electricity for the manufacturing that need a lot power?
I'd like to know the sources of electricity for DC, NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and Los Angeles.
I think I'll spend a little time today looking that info up.

China proceeds to build 1 new coal fired power plant a month. On average.
Joe says don't, the rest of the world does it anyways.

Oh, they are already attacking natural gas. EPA is putting out rules on oil and gas production faster than PotatoHead is printing money
Agreed. My point on that is that once they get NG to that point, it's going to impact more people and cost far more than what they are doing to coal. LINK

In 2021, fossil fuels remained the most common fuel type for electricity production in the U.S. The primary fuel type was natural gas, accounting for about 38.4% of total energy production nationwide. Coal was the second most common fuel type, accounting for 21.9% of electricity production. Nuclear was third at 18.9%.

I guess this means we will never become a "type 1 civilization"?
"A civilization known as "Type I" is able to collect and use all the available energy on its planet, that is, the theoretical equivalent of 10 to the16th watts. According to Kardashev, it is the type of civilization that Earth was closest to achieving in 1964. A civilization known as "Type II" would surpass the first by a factor of 10 billion, reaching a consumption of 10 to the 26th watts, this time using all the power emitted by its star. Finally, a civilization known as "Type III" would be able to collect and consume all the energy emitted by its galaxy, which is equivalent to 10 to the 37th watts."

Like over half of the worlds population survives on coal as a primary fuel source.. all part of their plan to further impoverish the worlds and take over other countries

Wind and solar will bankrupt this country
Ridiculous. Wind and solar are our only feasible alternative energy sources now. Blue hydrogen production is still too costly for broad scale applications.
Seriously we have to do something to increase production of renewables. Our climate's a joke, but people are suffering. Did you see all the reports of tornadoes, large hail, hurricane-force winds, flooding and general mayhem over East Texas and north Louisiana last night?

You work for the utility company don’t you? You seem like the type.

You won't care about the climate when you have no electricity to power anything. I mean how will you be able to see the black guy pounding your wife in your bed without lights on?

To make wind and solar profitable ......the taxpayers pay the freight. Something else has to take the place of this trash.
Again, wind and solar are not, nor were they ever intended to main power sources, they are Co-Gens .....
Still betting on a breakthrough in small nukes.

I find it hard to believe solar or wind are cheaper for equivalent power generation. And that is before taking into account replacement cycles and sheer land area.
Do some digging on the levelized $/MWh for each type of generation and even the capex $/MWp.
Coal has been losing this battle for along time. You identified one big issue with transportation but you also have high o&m and there obviously the cost of coal itself.

Which, on its face, should be a reason for the rules to be illegal.
This is not Star Trek where Mr Scott can pull a solution out of his arse to circumvent the laws of physics.

Yeah, for part time ......but let's not factor in the government hand outs to make it feasible.
Former CEO for Mitsubishi heavy Industries put it best .....
About 4 hours for solar and about 5-6 hours for wind .......
Some folks have never been to either ......

How much do you think the tax credit impacts the $/MWh? Let’s also not pretend that we don’t subsidize the others.

Is that supposed to be a comment on availability, yield or what?

You do realize that this happens pretty much every spring right? Has nothing to do with global warming or climate change.

How long does it take them to get replaced?

Not long. Especially right now. There’s a shite load of module inventory available.
