Why do so many people refer to SUVs as "trucks?"

First off, as a preface, for the record, I don't get outraged when someone calls an SUV a "truck" and it has no impact on my blood pressure and mood. It's just a casual and inconsequential annoyance – a curiosity more than anything.

Contrary to many on this board, it's possible to be annoyed by something without getting your drawers in a wad and letting it impact your day.

It's the same when someone calls my grand cherokee a Jeep... it is a jeep, but it's only a brand to me..

When I say I have a jeep, they think a real jeep not a SUV

Considering most people with trucks don’t actually use them, the truck label is bound to expand.

I have never heard anyone refer to an SUV as a truck, unless it was a pure work/farm/camp vehicle that they kept at the worksite/farm/camp.

ETA: And it's usually a beat up old 4WD Suburban with the seats removed, if they do.

It’s stolen valor. SUV drivers aren’t real man enough to drive a truck

The sad thing is they named a whole law and order show about the kind of guys that drive SUV’s and they still drive them

Most people call it by name.

Let's take the Tahoe.

Let's go in the suburban.

Are we going in the 4runner.

I used to get pissed off when people called 3 wheeler and 4 wheelers as ATVs. I wrote it off as Yankees that smoked poles for a living.

I’ve always considered use of the term “SUV” to be a homosexual tell.

Its just easier for them. It’s either a car, a truck, or a van to most ppl

The Expedition/Suburban class is what I think of when I hear SUV. No, it’s not a truck. Anything smaller is just a normal car.

But you started a whole thread for this ting you don't care about?

To be fair 4Runners are still built on a truck chassis, so they are trucks.
