NIL allows for unlimited roster sizes

It’s damn nuts, but that’s what’s happening. Hopefully athletes push back and go play somewhere willing to give them a scholarship. Not sure kids care enough about that now though.

Athletes are not going to accept a walk-on role b/c of NIL. They will choose the school that offers a scholarship spot along with NIL.

Why would an athlete care about getting a scholarship over cash money?
That's irrational.

Is there any proof this is happening in any numbers?

I don't even know why we're still pretending to require them to be enrolled in classes anyway at this point, honestly.

False. Roster still has limits around 125ish. & you still have limited scholarship numbers. You’re assuming we could “pay” for good players to join as walk ons.
Like others have said - show us examples of this happening. Sure, it’s possible, but not many are doing it.

kids care about. whether 10k of their 50k NIL deal immediately goes to tuition and that’s in state.
they aren’t giving 100 kids a million dollars a year.

Even if a school had a $1 billion NIL budget I doubt there are too many kids who want to play professionally that are willing to be 3rd string just for a paycheck.
Anecdotal evidence today shows that highly recruited players who aren't guaranteed playing time almost immediately are very likely to enter the portal at some point.
My guess is even if your scenario happens best case is you have a ton of paper depth, but end up with a back end 3-4 deep full of marginal players just there because they are overpaid.

I mean in theory, I guess you could hypothetically just give kids NIL deals instead of schollys but the reality of that is not happening anywhere in the country at least not that we've seen.

Even if a school can convince a kid to take a large bag in lieu of a scholarship, which is VERY doubtful, isn’t there a roster limit? You can’t just have “unlimited” players. Besides, players want to play…and sooner, than later. Coaches may want to load up on players and stack the bench. But it’s pretty clear, evident by the portal movement, that players do not want to wait their turn. They’re not going to ride the bench for the sake of money.

Your kid is a SEC recruit and you don’t know there is a roster limit including walkons? It’s 130 by the way.
