Why not let Herring start from here on out?

- Dude has been lights out
- Has proven to be able to go deep in the pitch count

Let that man cook on Sunday afternoons!

He's the first guy that goes out with a lead (or close game).
He's too important to save for Sunday.

A lot of posters shite on him early in the year, but he’s a gamer.

I agree
Had Missouri scored a few more runs early you end up waiting until Sunday to use one of your more effective pitchers and wasting his performance

I think you use him Friday or Saturday to win if close and start him Sunday if he wasn't needed in relief. Saving him for Sunday is too risky until more bullpen arms gain consistency. I'm also fine with going Ack then Herring on Sundays.

He's been one of the consistent bright spots in the role he's currently in. No reason to upset the applecart. He's effectively a starter anyway. He's throwing a starter's workload each weekend. He just happens to be doing it when the leverage is ratcheted up.
After two serviceable starts from Ackenhausen on Sundays, we can keep going to him there. We have 4 guys that can combine to get us roughly 22 innings a weekend.

I think he’s too valuable out of the pen.

He's too important to not save for Sundays. We have to win every series from here on out. Wasting him to throw the final 2 innings of a Friday night game, when he could give you 6 innings in a Sunday game is dumb imo.
We literally just saved him for Sunday and it’s the only series that we have won…

I'll admit it...I was one of those. Of course, we do have to remember he had an ERA right at double digits to the left of the decimal point and that was "earned" against a bunch of rent-a-game teams before SEC play. Yes, he has dramatically improved down to 2.12 ERA...29 IP...22 H...9 BB...43 K. His problem early was too many walks. Also to be factual, I remember him coming in with men on base and not preventing them from scoring. Since SEC play started, he has clearly been LSU's best pitcher which is why his ERA leads the team now.
On the flip side of the coin, don't expect another miracle turnaround for Thatcher Hurd. As I remember during the 2023 season, his ERA was around 7 until the playoffs and then all of a sudden he became a different pitcher. His 2024 season is pretty much like his 2023 one with an ERA of 6.75...30 IP...29 H...16 BB. A WHIP of 1.5 doesn't cut it. Pretty much obvious to me that he just got hot at the right time for a short stretch last season.

Not if we are in a situation where we are up by 1 or 2 on a friday. Im sure if he only throws an inning or two on friday, he’ll be available once more that weekend. Problem is, we have had to go to him too early in every series, so he ends ip throwing 50-60 pitches anyway. Which again, basically makes him a tandem starter. Its incredibly valuable on the backend.
If it was guaranteed he could start and give us 6 innings of 1 run ball, maybe, but no guarantee he is successful as a starter

Does it matter if he throws innings 1-5 vs innings 4-9?

I actually think it does. He's excelled in the higher leverage innings. That's harder to replace than a starter because it's such a mindset thing. Someone else said it earlier in the thread but he's an absolute gamer. He's our biggest competitor on the mound and I think it lends better to the bullpen than the rotation.
Right now we're enjoying the best of both because he gets the starters workload with the "slam-the-door" attitude.
If, for whatever reason, he comes back next season, I think he's got to be looked at as one of the weekend starters though.

Yep. Jones, Herring, Kling, and Guidry.

I'm not denying that he is valuable in that scenario. I just think at this point, he is more valuable giving you 5-6 innings pitched on Sundays. If Herring wasn't available to finish the game yesterday, how much confidence do you have that we win?

That is very valuable, but it screws you over on Sundays. We HAVE to win 2/3. Trying to piece together a Sunday pitching staff for the rest of the year isn't going to work.

We don't have a single pitcher on the roster that is guaranteed to do that.

he should become the sun starter soon
Posted on 4/22/24 at 9:36 am to lowhound
Because he is our ONLY reliable bull pen arm. If he starts, who come out to finish his game for us? Pitchers are creatures of habit. Starting a game could mess with his routine. Starting him on Sundays is idiotic to me.

but we literally did just that.
I get having him available Game 1 or 2 if needed, but if he gets to sunday why let someone else start?

We did not save him for Sunday. Had LSU taken the lead in the 8th or 9th inning on Saturday, who do you think would have come in the game?
